Is Minecraft: Story Mode on Netflix? Not Since 2022

Minecraft: Story Mode left Netflix on December 5, 2022, and stores in June 2019. What the Telltale series was, why it vanished, and if you can play it now.

Minecraft: Story Mode is no longer on Netflix. The interactive version, where you made choices with your remote, was removed on December 5, 2022. The original game was pulled from digital stores in June 2019 after its developer, Telltale Games, shut down. As of November 2026 there’s no official way to buy or stream it.

What Story Mode was

A choice-driven adventure game made by Telltale Games together with Mojang, released in episodes:

  • Season one (2015-2016): five main episodes plus three extra “Adventure Pass” episodes. You play as Jesse, who sets out with friends Petra, Lukas, Olivia and Axel to stop a monster called the Wither Storm, with help from the hero-turned-hermit Ivor.
  • Season two (2017): five episodes continuing Jesse’s story.

It played like Telltale’s other games: you walked around, talked to characters, made decisions that changed how people treated you, and pressed buttons in action scenes. There was a little crafting and building, but it was mostly a story.

It was the first time Minecraft had named characters and a plot. Our page on Minecraft characters covers how those characters relate (or don’t) to the main game. The Wither Storm, its big villain, also has its own explainer in the mobs section: the Wither Storm explained.

The Netflix version

In November 2018, Netflix added an interactive version of season one, one of its first “choose your path” titles alongside Black Mirror: Bandersnatch. You picked options with your remote and the story branched.

It was removed on December 5, 2022, when Netflix took down several of its older interactive titles.

Why you can’t buy it

Telltale Games closed most of its operations in September 2018. Without the company to maintain the licensing, Story Mode was delisted from digital stores on June 25, 2019. People who had bought the season pass but hadn’t downloaded every episode lost access to the rest, which made it a well-known example of digital games disappearing.

A new company bought the Telltale name later, but it hasn’t re-released Story Mode.

Can you play it now?

Not easily. Disc copies for some consoles still turn up second-hand, and episodes already downloaded to a device can still work, but that’s it. Avoid sites offering downloads; they’re unofficial at best.

If you want a Minecraft story today, the closest official options are the 2025 film A Minecraft Movie (a different story) and the Minecraft Dungeons games. See Minecraft spin-offs explained for what each one is and whether it’s still available, and the media hub for everything else.

Common questions

Is Minecraft: Story Mode still on Netflix?

No. The interactive version was removed from Netflix on December 5, 2022, and hasn't returned.

Can I still buy Minecraft: Story Mode?

No. It was delisted from digital stores in June 2019, after Telltale Games collapsed. Old physical console copies may still work, but online episode downloads are no longer available.

Is Minecraft: Story Mode canon?

It's a separate story told in the Minecraft world, with its own characters. None of them appear in the main game, and the 2025 film tells a different, unrelated story.
