Is the Wither Storm in Minecraft? No, Here's Where It's From

No, the Wither Storm isn't in vanilla Minecraft. It's the villain of Minecraft: Story Mode (2015). What it is, how mods add it, and the closest real boss.

No, the Wither Storm is not in Minecraft. You can’t spawn, summon or fight one in Java or Bedrock, on any version. It’s the main villain of Minecraft: Story Mode, the episodic adventure game Telltale Games released in 2015, and it only reaches the regular game through fan mods.

What the Wither Storm is

In Story Mode’s first season, a Wither is built around a command block, and the command block turns it into something much worse. The result is a huge, three-headed mass of blocks and tentacles that pulls in the land, mobs and people around it with a tractor beam and keeps growing. Most of the first half of season one is the main cast, led by Jesse, trying to find a way to destroy the command block at its core.

It’s a memorable design, and kids who played Story Mode or watched let’s-plays of it have kept searching for it ever since. That’s why “wither storm” is still a common search even though the game it came from is hard to get today.

Why you can’t just go play Story Mode

Telltale closed in 2018, and Story Mode was pulled from digital stores in 2019. Our page on what happened to Minecraft: Story Mode covers the details, including the Netflix interactive version.

Getting a Wither Storm through mods

On Java, fan-made mods recreate the Wither Storm with its growth stages, tractor beam and terrain eating. Cracker’s Wither Storm Mod is the best known. These are unofficial: they’re not made by Mojang, they need a mod loader, and they can break with game updates. If you try one, download it only from a trusted mod site and follow a safe mod install guide. Never download “Wither Storm” files from video descriptions or random sites, which is a common way to spread malware.

Bedrock players will also find community add-ons that claim to add it. The same caution applies: if it isn’t from a source you trust, skip it.

The closest thing in vanilla

The real Wither is the boss you can summon yourself: four soul sand blocks in a T and three wither skeleton skulls. It has 300 health on Java (up to 600 on Bedrock Hard), fires exploding skulls and breaks through almost any block. It’s not a world-eater, but it’ll wreck a base if you summon it in the wrong place. Our guide to summoning the Wither shows how to do it safely, and the mobs hub lists every boss and mob that’s actually in the game.

Common questions

Is the Wither Storm real in Minecraft?

Not in the actual game. It only exists in Minecraft: Story Mode and in fan-made mods. No version of Java or Bedrock lets you summon it.

Can you summon the Wither Storm with a command?

No. There's no wither storm entity in vanilla, so /summon can't create one. Videos that show it are using a mod or an add-on.

Is the Wither Storm stronger than the Wither?

In the story, by a huge margin: it swallows whole areas of the world. In the real game, the regular Wither is the strongest thing you can summon yourself.
