Minecraft Spin-offs: Dungeons II, Legends and the Movie

Minecraft spin-offs are separate games and films set in the Minecraft world. The main ones are Minecraft Dungeons (2020) and its sequel Minecraft Dungeons II (September 2026), the strategy game Minecraft Legends (2023), the narrative series Minecraft: Story Mode (2015-2017), the phone game Minecraft Earth (2019-2021), and the film A Minecraft Movie (2025), whose sequel is due July 23, 2027. None of them is required to play the main game, and none of them adds anything to it beyond the occasional cape.

Here’s what each one is and whether you can still get it (checked November 2026).

Minecraft Dungeons (2020)

An action role-playing game: you fight through dungeons from a top-down view, collect gear and enchantments, and take on the Arch-Illager. There’s no building or mining. Up to four players can play together, locally or online, and it has cross-play.

It’s finished and no longer gets new content, but it’s still sold on PC and consoles and goes on sale often. It’s a good choice for families, because the combat is simple and co-op on one screen works well.

Minecraft Dungeons II (2026)

The sequel came out on September 29, 2026, on PC (including Steam), Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2 and Switch. It’s another action dungeon crawler in the same style. Owning the original Dungeons adds the Hero cape in Minecraft, and preorders of Dungeons II came with the Twisted cape; see Minecraft capes.

Minecraft Legends (2023)

An action-strategy game released on April 18, 2023. You ride around the Overworld gathering resources and directing armies of mobs against invading piglins. On January 10, 2024, Mojang announced that its last update had been released. You can still buy and play it, including multiplayer, but it won’t get new content.

Reviews were mixed. It’s more fun with friends than alone.

Minecraft: Story Mode (2015-2017)

Telltale Games’ choice-driven adventure, with named characters like Jesse and Petra. It was delisted in 2019, and the interactive Netflix version left Netflix in December 2022. It has its own page: what happened to Minecraft: Story Mode.

Minecraft Earth (2019-2021)

An augmented-reality phone game: you built in the real world through your phone’s camera and collected mobs and blocks on walks around your neighborhood. It launched in early access in 2019, then shut down on June 30, 2021, partly because the pandemic made walking around to play difficult. It no longer works. Sites offering a download are offering a dead app at best, and malware at worst.

A Minecraft Movie (2025)

A live-action comedy adventure from Warner Bros. and Legendary, directed by Jared Hess and released on April 4, 2025 in the US. Jack Black plays Steve, and Jason Momoa plays Garrett, a washed-up video game champion. It was one of the biggest films of 2025, earning over $950 million worldwide, and it brought a lot of new and returning players to the game.

There was also a movie-themed event in the Bedrock game with its own cape, but nothing from the film changed how the game plays.

The sequel

Warner Bros. has scheduled a sequel for July 23, 2027. Jared Hess is returning to direct, co-writing with Chris Galletta. As of November 2026, the cast and story haven’t been officially confirmed, so treat anything else you read as rumor until Mojang or Warner Bros. announces it. New announcements tend to show up first on minecraft.net and at Minecraft Live.

Who are the characters?

The spin-offs introduced the only named characters in the Minecraft universe, from Jesse to the Arch-Illager to the movie’s Garrett. Our Minecraft characters page sorts them out, and every Minecraft edition, explained covers the versions of the main game, which are a different thing from spin-offs.
