How to Make Powered Rails in Minecraft and Space Them

Six gold ingots, 1 stick and 1 redstone dust make 6 powered rails. How to make powered rails in Minecraft, how far apart to place them, and brake tricks.

Craft powered rails with 6 gold ingots, 1 stick and 1 redstone dust. Put the gold in the left and right columns of a crafting table (3 each), the stick in the center slot, and the redstone dust directly below the stick. You get 6 powered rails.

They’re the rails with a red stripe that light up when powered. On, they push a minecart forward; off, they stop it.

Getting the gold

Gold is the costly part. Six ingots per craft adds up on a long line. Good sources:

  • Mining at Y -16 or so in normal biomes, or anywhere in the badlands, where gold ore generates far higher and in larger amounts.
  • Nether gold ore, which drops nuggets you can craft into ingots.
  • A zombified piglin farm later on, which turns gold into a near-free resource.

You can also find powered rails ready-made in mineshaft chests, usually 1 to 4 at a time. Mineshafts also have plenty of normal rail to collect.

Powering them

A powered rail does nothing until it gets a redstone signal. The easiest fix is a redstone torch placed beside the rail or under the block it sits on, which keeps it on permanently. For a station, use a lever or button so you can switch it on to launch the cart.

One power source turns on the rail it touches plus up to 8 more powered rails in a row, so a torch in the middle of a run can light up to 17. If redstone is new to you, the basics guide explains signals and torches.

How many you need

These numbers come from community testing on the Minecraft Wiki’s minecart tutorial and apply to flat track:

Situation Spacing
Cart with a player, keep top speed 1 every 34 blocks
Empty cart 1 every 27 blocks
Starting from a stop 3 in a row
Going uphill Roughly every other block

You’ll see “every 38 blocks” quoted a lot. It almost works, but the cart dips just below top speed, so 34 is the safer rule. Top speed on a rail line is 8 blocks per second either way.

Using them as brakes

An unpowered powered rail slows a cart sharply and usually stops it within a block, even on a slope. That’s the standard station design: put an unpowered powered rail at the end of the line with a button next to it. The cart stops, you get out, and pressing the button sends it off again.

Normal rails make up the rest of the track, and you’ll need a minecart to ride. More transport guides are in the guides hub.

Common questions

How far apart should powered rails be?

For a cart with a player on flat track, one powered rail every 34 blocks holds top speed. Empty carts need one about every 27 blocks, and uphill track needs them much closer.

Do powered rails need to be powered all the time?

Yes, to boost. An unpowered powered rail acts as a brake. A redstone torch beside or under the rail keeps it on permanently.

Can powered rails go around corners?

No. Powered rails are always straight. Use normal rails for curves.
