How to Make Rails in Minecraft: 16 Rails From 6 Iron
Six iron ingots and 1 stick make 16 rails. How to make rails in Minecraft, lay curves and junctions, take rails from mineshafts, and the other rail types.

Put 3 iron ingots down the left column of a crafting table, 3 down the right column, and 1 stick in the center. That gives 16 rails. It’s the same H-shaped layout as the grid above.
Plain rails don’t move a cart by themselves. They guide it, and you push or boost it along. For speed you’ll mix in powered rails, which need gold.
Free rails from mineshafts
Before you spend iron, check for a mineshaft. Their tunnels are lined with rails, and every one you break drops as an item. A single mineshaft can hand you a few hundred rails, plus the odd chest with powered rails. Watch out for cave spider spawners while you collect.
Laying track
- Straight: place rails in a line. They connect automatically.
- Curves: place them in an L and the corner rail bends to join both sides.
- Slopes: rails climb one block up per block forward if the ground steps up. They can’t go up a 2-block wall.
- Junctions: at a T, the corner rail picks one direction. Power it with a lever or redstone and it switches to the other branch, which is how stations route carts.
Rails need a solid block under them. They pop off if the block is removed, and water knocks them loose.
The four rail types
| Rail | Recipe | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Rail | 6 iron + 1 stick | Guides carts, can curve |
| Powered rail | 6 gold + 1 stick + 1 redstone | Speeds carts up when on, brakes when off |
| Detector rail | 6 iron + 1 stone pressure plate + 1 redstone | Sends a redstone signal when a cart rolls over |
| Activator rail | 6 iron + 2 sticks + 1 redstone torch | Ejects riders, primes TNT carts, toggles hopper carts |
The last three make 6 each, and none of them can curve.
Is rail worth it?
For moving yourself long distances, a boat on an ice road is faster. Rails win in other places: underground, where ice is a pain to supply, and for moving items. A hopper minecart on a loop is the classic way to haul loot from a distant farm to your storage.
Iron is the limit early on. Once you have an iron farm, a few hundred rails cost almost nothing. You’ll also need a minecart (5 iron in a U) to ride. Other transport and redstone guides are in the guides hub.
Common questions
How many rails do you get from one craft?
16 rails from 6 iron ingots and 1 stick.
How do you make a rail turn?
Place rails in an L shape and the corner rail curves on its own. At a T-junction, a redstone signal on the corner rail flips which way it points.
Are rails faster than boats on ice?
No. Minecarts top out at 8 blocks per second, while a boat on packed or blue ice is much faster. Rails are cheaper to build and work underground and for item transport.
