How to Make a Minecart in Minecraft: Chest, Hopper and TNT
Five iron ingots in a U make a minecart. How to make a minecart in Minecraft, ride it, move villagers, and craft chest, hopper, furnace and TNT minecarts.

A minecart takes 5 iron ingots arranged in a U: one in the middle-left slot, one in the middle-right slot, and three across the bottom row of a crafting table. You get one minecart, and the recipe is the same in Java and Bedrock.
Riding it
Place the minecart on a rail and use it to get in. On flat track you’ll need a push or a powered rail to get going; downhill, gravity does the work. Press sneak to get out.
Rails themselves are iron and sticks; see how to make rails for the recipe and how many you get per craft. Without powered rails every 30 or so blocks, a minecart on flat track coasts to a stop, so long lines need gold as well as iron.
For pure travel speed, minecarts lose to boats on ice. An ice boat road in the Nether is several times faster than a rail line in the Overworld. Minecarts win at carrying things, though.
Moving mobs
Any mob that bumps into an empty minecart climbs in and stays there until the cart is broken or passes over an activator rail. That’s the standard way to move villagers: lead one into a cart, push it along a short track, and break the cart at the destination. It’s the first step for a trading hall or a villager breeder.
The minecart variants
Combine a minecart with a block in the crafting grid for a cart that does something:
| Variant | Recipe | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Minecart with chest | Minecart + chest | Carries 27 slots of items |
| Minecart with hopper | Minecart + hopper | Picks up items and pulls from containers above |
| Minecart with furnace | Minecart + furnace (Java) | Pushes itself along when fueled with coal |
| Minecart with TNT | Minecart + TNT | Explodes when it passes an activator rail |
The hopper minecart is the useful one for farms. In Java, run it on a loop under a field or mob farm and it picks up drops through the floor, then unloads into a regular hopper at a station. Chest minecarts are good for moving large amounts of ore from a deep mine to your base without filling your inventory.
Things that break minecart setups
- An unpowered powered rail acts as a brake, so a station on a powered rail with a button stops the cart until you press the button to launch it again.
- A rail line through a cave is a mob magnet. Light it or enclose it.
- Two minecarts on one line collide. Use separate tracks for each direction.
Common questions
How do you get out of a minecart?
Press sneak (Shift on PC, the right stick on most controllers, or the leave button on touch screens).
Can you push a minecart without powered rails?
Yes, you can push it by walking into it, and it rolls downhill on its own, but on flat track it slows and stops. Powered rails are what keep it moving.
Can mobs ride minecarts?
Yes. Most mobs that walk into an empty minecart get in, which is how players move villagers long distances.
