How to Make a Circle in Minecraft: Row Charts for 7 to 21

Build circles row by row from a width chart. How to make a circle in Minecraft for diameters 7 to 21, mirror one quarter, and stack circles into domes.

By minecraft.bd Editorial Team·Updated

Minecraft circles are built row by row from a template. Pick a diameter, mark the center, then lay each row at the width the template gives you: the rows get wider toward the middle and narrower toward the edges. Build one quarter, mirror it to the other three, and you have a circle. The table below gives row widths for the common sizes, so you don’t need to do any math.

Pick a size

Small circles look blocky no matter what. A 7-wide circle is really a rounded square, and it’s only around 15 blocks across that a circle starts to look properly round. For towers, 9 to 13 is typical; for domes, fountains and arenas, 21 and up.

Use an odd diameter if something has to sit in the middle (a beacon, a staircase, a door lined up with a path). Odd circles have one center block. Even circles have a 2×2 center.

Row widths

Each number is how many blocks wide a row is, starting from the top edge and going to the middle row. The bottom half is the same list in reverse. These are for filled circles; for an outline, place just the two end blocks of each row and fill any gaps between rows.

Diameter Row widths, top edge to middle
7 3, 5, 7, 7
9 5, 7, 9, 9, 9
11 5, 7, 9, 11, 11, 11
13 5, 9, 11, 11, 13, 13, 13
15 5, 9, 11, 13, 13, 15, 15, 15
21 7, 11, 13, 15, 17, 19, 19, 21, 21, 21, 21

So a 9-wide circle, top to bottom, is rows of 5, 7, 9, 9, 9, 9, 9, 7, 5. Count it: that’s 9 rows, and the circle is 9 wide and 9 tall.

Different circle generators round slightly differently, so you’ll sometimes see a 13 or 15 with one row a block wider or narrower. Both are fine; consistency matters more than which version you pick.

Building it step by step

  1. Mark the center. Put a block of a different color there.
  2. Mark the four points. Count out from the center along north, south, east and west to the edge, and place a marker at each end. For a 15 circle, that’s 7 blocks out from the center.
  3. Build one quarter. Using the template, lay the top rows from the top marker toward the side marker.
  4. Mirror it. Copy the same steps in the other three quarters. Each quarter is identical, just flipped.
  5. Check symmetry. Walk around it. If one part looks flat or bulgy, count that row again.

A quick tip: a circle is also symmetric across its diagonals. If the steps going down the side don’t match the steps across the top, something is off.

Domes and spheres

A sphere is a stack of circles that shrink toward the top and bottom. For a dome, build the full-size circle as the base, then go up one layer at a time, using smaller and smaller circles. The trick is that the circles shrink slowly at first and quickly near the top, the same way the row widths in the table do. In fact, you can use the template sideways: the row widths of a circle are the diameters of each layer of the matching sphere.

For a 15-wide dome, that means layers of 15, 15, 15, 13, 13, 11, 9 and 5, from the ground up.

Domes go up fast once you have scaffolding to stand on. Glass domes look great over gardens; concrete comes in 16 colors for something bolder.

Using a tool instead

On Java, the WorldEdit mod can make circles, cylinders and spheres instantly with a command, which is how most big server builds do it. For survival or Bedrock, building from the template is the way. Circles are a staple of beginner build ideas like round towers and fountains, so it’s worth practicing one small one before you commit to a castle.

Common questions

Is there a command for making circles?

Not in vanilla Minecraft. On Java, the WorldEdit mod has commands for cylinders and spheres. Otherwise, build from a template like the table on this page or a pixel circle generator.

Should I use an odd or even diameter?

Odd diameters have a single center block, which makes them easier to line up with doors, towers and paths. Even diameters have a 2 by 2 center and are fine if nothing has to sit in the exact middle.

How do I make a circle look smoother?

Go bigger. Small circles look like octagons because there are too few blocks to show the curve. Anything from about 15 blocks across looks properly round.
