How to Make Scaffolding in Minecraft and Build Tall Fast

Six bamboo and 1 string make 6 scaffolding. How to make scaffolding in Minecraft, climb it, build sideways, break a whole tower and farm bamboo.

Minecraft crafting recipe for scaffolding: top row bamboo, string, bamboo; middle row bamboo, empty, bamboo; bottom row bamboo, empty, bamboo. Makes 6 scaffolding.
Crafting table layout. Empty squares stay empty.

Put 1 string in the top-middle slot of a crafting table and 6 bamboo down the left and right columns (3 each). That makes 6 scaffolding. It’s the fastest way to build tall without towering up on dirt and leaving a mess.

Getting the bamboo and string

Bamboo grows in jungles, with dense forests of it in bamboo jungles. Break the stalk anywhere and everything above drops. Pandas sometimes drop bamboo, and they live in the same biome. Replant one piece on dirt, grass or sand and it shoots up quickly; bone meal speeds it up further. Bamboo doesn’t need water.

String comes from spiders (0 to 2 each) or from breaking cobwebs with a sword. One string covers 6 scaffolding, so you’ll run out of bamboo long before string.

Using scaffolding

Scaffolding behaves differently from normal blocks, which is the whole point:

  • Building up. Look at a scaffolding block (not the top face) and place more: it stacks on top of the column, even if you’re standing at the bottom. You can raise a tower 20 blocks without leaving the ground.
  • Building out. Click the top face to extend it sideways. Each block can sit up to 6 blocks away from a supported column before it falls.
  • Climbing. Walk into it and jump to go up. Sneak to go down. You don’t take fall damage drifting down through it.
  • Placing it like a normal block. Sneak while placing if you want it exactly where you clicked.

Tearing it down

Break the bottom block of a column and every piece above it collapses and drops. Stand nearby to collect. That’s the main advantage over a ladder or a pillar of dirt: cleanup takes seconds.

Things to watch

  • It burns. Keep it clear of lava and fire. Leftovers work as weak furnace fuel, a quarter of an item per block.
  • Overhangs have a limit. If a sideways run starts dropping blocks, you’ve passed the 6-block reach. Add a new column from the ground and keep going.
  • It’s temporary by design. Don’t build anything permanent on it; breaking one bottom block takes the whole column with it.

Scaffolding is most useful on big projects like towers, castles and pixel art. If you’re looking for one to start, our beginner building ideas list a few. More crafting help is on the guides hub.

Common questions

How far can scaffolding go sideways?

Up to 6 blocks out from a supported column. Anything further falls unless another column supports it.

How do you go down scaffolding?

Stand on it and sneak. You drop slowly through each block. Jump to climb back up.

How do you remove scaffolding quickly?

Break the bottom block of a column. Every scaffolding block resting on it breaks and drops as an item.
