Can You Breed Polar Bears in Minecraft? No, Here's Why
No, polar bears can't be bred in Minecraft on Java or Bedrock, and no food works. Where baby polar bears come from, keeping a cub small, and spawn eggs.

No. Polar bears can’t be bred in Minecraft, on Java or Bedrock. No food puts them into love mode, fish included, and two bears kept together will never produce a cub. The only baby polar bears are ones that spawn naturally, or ones you create in Creative with a spawn egg.
That’s been true since polar bears were added in 2016 and is still the case in the 26.x updates. Polar bears also can’t be tamed; our polar bear taming page covers leading one home on a lead instead.
Where baby polar bears come from
Polar bears spawn in groups of one or two. When two spawn together, the second one is a cub, so in practice you’ll often see a mother with her baby. They appear in:
- Snowy plains, ice spikes, frozen oceans and deep frozen oceans on both editions
- Frozen rivers, snowy slopes, jagged peaks and frozen peaks as well on Bedrock
On frozen oceans you’ll often find them standing on ice floes. Bedrock also has a higher spawn weight in those ocean biomes, so polar bears are noticeably easier to find there than on Java. If a mob search is turning up nothing, the biomes guide helps you recognize the cold biomes from a distance.
Keeping a cub
Cubs are passive, but their mothers aren’t. Get close to a cub, or hit it, and any adult nearby turns hostile. An adult has 30 health and hits for 6 on Normal and 9 on Hard, which is a lot against iron armor. On Java, every adult in a wide area responds when a cub is attacked.
If you want a cub at your base:
- Lead the adult away first, or deal with it from range.
- Put a lead on the cub. Cubs accept leads like adults do.
- Walk it home slowly and tie it to a fence post.
A cub grows into an adult after 24,000 ticks, about 20 minutes. If you want it to stay small, use a golden dandelion on it (added in Java 26.1 and Bedrock 26.10). That pauses its growth until you use another golden dandelion to let it continue. It’s the only way to keep a “pet” baby polar bear for good. The cub also got a redesigned model in that same update.
Spawn eggs in Creative
In Creative mode, using a polar bear spawn egg on the ground spawns an adult. Using it on an existing polar bear spawns a cub instead, which is how spawn eggs work for most mobs. That’s the closest thing to breeding the game offers, but spawn eggs aren’t obtainable in survival.
Animals that look similar and can be bred
If you’re after a snowy-biome animal you can actually raise a family of:
- Foxes in taigas and snowy taigas (including white snow foxes) breed with sweet berries or glow berries, and a baby bred by you will trust you.
- Pandas are another big bear-shaped mob that breeds with bamboo, though they live in jungles, not snow.
- Wolves breed with meat once tamed, and the snowy wolf variant lives in groves.
Mods and Bedrock add-ons can add polar bear breeding, but that isn’t part of the vanilla game. If a video shows bears breeding, check whether it’s using an add-on.
Common questions
What do polar bears eat in Minecraft?
Nothing you can feed them. Polar bears ignore every food item, including fish. They only drop raw cod or salmon when killed.
How do you get a baby polar bear?
Find one in the wild. Polar bears spawn alone or in pairs in snowy plains, ice spikes and frozen oceans, and a pair is usually a mother with a cub.
How long does a baby polar bear take to grow up?
About 20 minutes of game time. You can't speed it up, but a golden dandelion pauses its growth indefinitely.
