How to Tame a Polar Bear: Taking one home on a lead. 1. Craft a lead from 4 string and 1 slimeball. 2. Approach carefully, away from any cub if it's an adult. A lone cub is the safest choice. 3. Use the lead on the bear. It's now leashed to you. 4. Walk it home slowly. If you go too far, around 10 blocks, the lead snaps. 5. Tie the lead to a fence post to keep it in place, or fence it into a snowy enclosure.

You can’t tame a polar bear in Minecraft. There’s no food, item or trick for it in Java or Bedrock 1.21, and polar bears can’t be bred either. Mods and add-ons can add taming, but vanilla doesn’t.

What you can do is put one on a lead and bring it home. It won’t follow you or fight for you, but it will stay where you tie it. That’s as close to a pet polar bear as the game gets.

Where polar bears live

Polar bears spawn in snowy plains, ice spikes and frozen oceans, usually alone or as a mother with a cub. Bedrock also spawns them on frozen rivers and snowy mountain slopes and peaks.

How they behave

Adults are neutral. They leave you alone unless:

  • You hit them.
  • You get close to their cub. A mother will charge if you walk near or attack the baby, and in Java nearby adults can join in.

Cubs are always passive. An adult has 30 health and hits hard, 6 damage on Normal and 9 on Hard, so an angry one in early-game armor is a real threat. If you get chased, back away from the cub; the adult calms down once you’re out of range.

Taking one home on a lead

  1. Craft a lead from 4 string and 1 slimeball.
  2. Approach carefully, away from any cub if it’s an adult. A lone cub is the safest choice.
  3. Use the lead on the bear. It’s now leashed to you.
  4. Walk it home slowly. If you go too far, around 10 blocks, the lead snaps.
  5. Tie the lead to a fence post to keep it in place, or fence it into a snowy enclosure.

A cub will grow into an adult after about 20 minutes. Adults in your enclosure stay neutral, as long as you don’t hurt them.

If you want a real companion

These animals actually tame:

Animal How to tame What you get
Wolf Bones A fighter that follows you; see taming a wolf
Cat Raw cod or salmon Scares off creepers and phantoms; see taming a cat
Fox Breed two wild foxes; the kit trusts you A follower that won’t run; see taming a fox
Horse Mount it repeatedly Fast travel; see taming a horse

If you want a big white animal following you around, a tamed snowy wolf from a grove biome is the closest look-alike. For more about who’s who among Minecraft’s creatures, see our characters and mobs guide, or browse the guides hub.

Common questions

Can you tame a polar bear with fish?

No. Polar bears don't accept food at all in vanilla Minecraft. Fish does nothing, and there is no taming item.

Can you breed polar bears?

No. Cubs only appear through natural spawning, and they grow into adults after about 20 minutes.

Can you put a polar bear on a lead?

Yes. A lead works on polar bears, which is the closest thing to keeping one as a pet.
