Potion of Fire Resistance: Recipe for Lava Immunity
Add magma cream to an Awkward Potion for 3 minutes of immunity to fire and lava, or 8 with redstone. The Fire Resistance recipe and when to drink it.
A Potion of Fire Resistance makes you completely immune to fire, lava and burning for 3 minutes, or 8 minutes if you add redstone. You brew it from an Awkward Potion and one piece of magma cream. If you plan to spend real time in the Nether, this is the first potion worth stocking.
Brewing a Potion of Fire Resistance
You need a brewing stand, blaze powder for fuel, water bottles and nether wart.
- Put up to three water bottles in the bottom slots and nether wart in the top slot. That gives you Awkward Potions.
- Add magma cream to the top slot. The bottles become Potions of Fire Resistance (3:00).
- Optional: add redstone dust to extend them to 8:00.
- Optional: add gunpowder for splash potions, then dragon’s breath for lingering ones.
Magma cream is a slimeball crafted with blaze powder, or a drop from magma cubes in basalt deltas and fortresses. If you have a slime farm or a blaze farm going, you’ll never run short.
| Version | Duration |
|---|---|
| Drinkable | 3:00 |
| Drinkable + redstone | 8:00 |
| Splash | same as drinkable |
| Lingering | 1/4 of drinkable (0:45 or 2:00) |
There is no level II. Since the potion already blocks all fire and lava damage, a stronger version would have nothing to add.
What it actually protects you from
Anything the game counts as fire damage: standing in fire, burning after you climb out of lava, swimming in lava, campfires, magma blocks and the small fireballs that blazes throw. You can walk along the bottom of a Nether lava ocean with it, which is the fastest way to recover gear after a bad fall.
It does not stop explosion damage from ghast fireballs, melee hits from magma cubes, or drowning. Lava also still blinds you. You can see only a few blocks while submerged, so keep a pickaxe ready to dig out once the timer gets low. Watch that timer: the effect icon starts blinking in the last 10 seconds, and in lava that is your warning to get out now.
When to drink one
- Blaze spawners. A Nether fortress blaze room stops being dangerous. Blazes can only hurt you with their fireballs, and those do nothing.
- Ancient debris mining. Strip-mining at Y 15 in the Nether opens lava pockets constantly. One 8-minute potion covers a full session of hunting ancient debris, bed mining included.
- Lava parkour or recovery. Fell in with your inventory? A Fire Resistance potion in your hotbar turns a lost run into a short swim.
- The Wither fight, in a smaller way: it removes the burn damage, but the Wither’s skulls are explosions, so pair it with good armor.
A splash version thrown at your horse or strider-riding friend works too. Splash potions affect everything in range, which also means you can share one with a group in a pinch.
For the full ingredient list and how modifiers stack, see our potion brewing guide. If your Nether trips end in long falls instead of fire, a Potion of Slow Falling is the other bottle to carry.
Common questions
How do you make a Potion of Fire Resistance?
Brew nether wart into a water bottle to get an Awkward Potion, then add magma cream. Add redstone afterward to stretch it from 3 to 8 minutes.
Is there a Fire Resistance II?
No. Glowstone does nothing useful here because the effect is already full immunity. Redstone for a longer duration is the only upgrade.
Does Fire Resistance protect you from blazes?
Yes. Blaze fireballs deal fire damage, so you take nothing from them while the effect lasts. Ghast fireballs still hurt because their damage comes from the explosion.
