Bastion Remnant in Minecraft: Loot and How to Raid One
Bastion remnants are the only source of netherite upgrade templates. The four bastion layouts, piglins and brutes, the gold-packed loot, and raiding one.
A bastion remnant is a large ruined blackstone fortress in the Nether, home to piglins, piglin brutes and sometimes hoglins. It’s the only place to find netherite upgrade templates, and its chests are packed with gold. It generates in every Nether biome except basalt deltas.
It’s also the most dangerous structure most players raid before the Ender Dragon. Take it seriously.
The four layouts

You can usually tell which one you’ve found from outside. Treasure bastions look like a big square block with a hole in the middle. Bridge bastions have the long bridge over lava.
Piglins and brutes
Piglins leave you alone if you wear at least one piece of gold armor. They still turn on you if you:
- open a chest, barrel or shulker box inside the bastion,
- mine gold blocks or gold ore,
- hurt a piglin.
Piglin brutes ignore gold and always attack. They swing golden axes, hit very hard and don’t respawn once killed, so clearing them is a one-time job. Kill brutes first.
Hoglins in the stables are hostile to everyone. Warped fungus scares them off, and they drop pork.
The loot
- Netherite upgrade templates. Guaranteed in the treasure room chest, possible in other chests. You need one per netherite item, but you can duplicate them with seven diamonds and a block of netherrack.
- Ancient debris and netherite scraps, especially in treasure rooms. It’s a shortcut if mining for ancient debris is going slowly.
- Gold blocks and ingots, gilded blackstone (which can drop gold nuggets).
- Enchanted diamond and gold gear, crossbows, spectral arrows, lodestones.
- Snout armor trim template and the Pigstep music disc.
How to raid one
- Wear gold boots or a gold helmet, plus good armor. Bring a shield, food, blocks and Fire Resistance.
- Light the area and pillar up to look at the layout before going in.
- Find and kill brutes first, ideally one at a time from cover.
- Block chests from piglin view before opening them, or just accept you’ll fight a few.
- In treasure rooms, deal with magma cube spawners and bridge over the lava instead of jumping.
On Java, bastions and Nether fortresses are placed from the same grid, so if you’ve found one, the other is rarely far away. Compare all structures on the structures hub.
Common questions
Where do you find netherite upgrade templates?
Only in bastion remnant chests. Treasure rooms always have them, and other bastion chests sometimes do. Duplicate one with diamonds and netherrack once you have it.
How do you stop piglins attacking you in a bastion?
Wear at least one piece of gold armor. Piglins still get angry if you open chests, break gold blocks or attack one of them, and brutes attack no matter what.
Which Nether biomes have bastions?
Every Nether biome except basalt deltas.
