Minecraft Education: Guides for Teachers and Parents

Minecraft Education is the classroom version built on Bedrock. Who can get it, licensing, logging in, add-ons, homeschool use, and free Hour of Code.

By minecraft.bd Editorial Team·Updated

Minecraft Education is the classroom version of Minecraft, built on Bedrock Edition and made by Mojang with Microsoft. It adds lesson worlds, coding tools and teacher controls, and it signs in with school Microsoft 365 accounts rather than personal ones. Schools have used it since its full launch in November 2016, for everything from coding and chemistry to history and reading.

This section answers the practical questions: what it actually is, how to get it, why a login fails, and what you can do with it at home.

New to Minecraft Education? Start here

If you’re a teacher or parent working out whether it’s worth it, read Minecraft Education: what it is and who it’s for. It explains the features, how it differs from the regular game, and what classrooms use it for.

Ready to install? Minecraft Education download and licensing covers the platforms (Windows, Mac, Chromebook, iPad, Android and iPhone), who can buy licenses, and what they cost.

Problems and setup

Most support questions are about signing in. Minecraft Education only accepts a Microsoft 365 work or school account, and a personal Microsoft account won’t work. Minecraft Education login explains which account to use and how to fix the common errors, including what the school’s IT admin needs to check.

Want to customize lessons? Mods and add-ons in Minecraft Education explains what works (Bedrock add-ons, world templates, Code Builder) and why Java mods never will.

Learning at home

Families without a school license have options. Minecraft Education for homeschool compares buying a license with using the regular game plus free lesson plans.

For a free first taste of coding, Minecraft Hour of Code covers the one-hour tutorials Mojang has made with Code.org since 2015, including the Hour of AI lesson from 2025. After that, learning to code with Minecraft maps the longer route from block coding to real Java.

Parents choosing between the regular game and the classroom version may also want Minecraft for parents, and every Minecraft edition, explained shows where Education fits next to Java and Bedrock.

Minecraft Education is a Mojang and Microsoft product. minecraft.bd is an independent guide and isn’t connected to either; for license problems and account issues, the official Minecraft Education support site and your school’s IT team are the people who can actually fix them.
