Phantom in Minecraft: Why They Spawn, How to Stop Them

Phantoms only spawn after three in-game days without sleep, so a bed every few nights stops them. How the timer works, fighting them, and membrane.

By minecraft.bd Editorial Team·Updated
Phantom stats in Minecraft: health 20 HP (10 hearts); damage Java: 2 HP (3 Hard). Bedrock: 4 / 6 / 9 HP; spawns Overworld, above sleep-deprived players, under open sky; group size 1-2 Easy, 1-3 Normal, 1-4 Hard; drops 0-1 phantom membrane (player or wolf kill); xp 5.

Phantoms are flying undead that swoop at players who haven’t slept for three in-game days or more. If you sleep in a bed every few nights, you’ll never see one. If you don’t, they show up in groups and dive at you until sunrise.

What triggers them

The game tracks “time since last rest” for every player. Once it reaches three in-game days (72,000 ticks, one hour of real play), phantoms can start spawning above you. Getting into a bed at night resets it, even on a server where the night doesn’t skip because others are still awake. Dying resets it too.

On Java they need night or a thunderstorm, you need to be above Y 62 with sky above you, and the chance climbs each night you stay awake. Bedrock spawns them wherever the spawn spot is dark enough, which means they can show up during the day in some situations. Being in creative mode doesn’t stop them; spectator mode does.

Every player on a server has their own timer. A friend who never sleeps gets phantoms even if you sleep every night.

Fighting phantoms

Phantoms circle overhead and then dive in a straight line. Watch the swoop, step aside or raise a shield, and hit it as it pulls up. A bow works too, but they’re quick and hard to lead.

On Java they barely scratch you (2 damage), but on Bedrock a Hard-mode phantom hits for 9, and three at once is a real threat. They’re undead, so Smite works and a splash Potion of Healing hurts them.

Cats are the easy defense. Phantoms keep at least 16 blocks away from a cat, so a cat sitting near your base keeps the sky clear. Bedrock phantoms avoid ocelots as well.

Phantom membrane

Each phantom has a 50% chance to drop one membrane, and Looting raises the average. Membrane has two uses:

  • Repairing an elytra on an anvil (Mending is better long-term, but membrane works before you find the book).
  • Brewing a Potion of Slow Falling from an awkward potion.

If you need membranes, skip sleep for a few nights on purpose, stand somewhere open, and fight with a Looting sword.

Turning them off

On Java 1.21.11 and later the game rule is spawn_phantoms; on Bedrock and older Java it’s doInsomnia. Set it to false with /gamerule if you run the world; our commands list covers the syntax.

Common questions

How do you stop phantoms from spawning?

Sleep in a bed at least once every three in-game days. Dying also resets the timer. On a server where you can't control sleep, turn off insomnia with a game rule if you have operator access.

Do phantoms burn in daylight?

Yes. They're undead and catch fire in sunlight like zombies, so any phantoms still around at dawn usually die on their own.

What is phantom membrane used for?

Repairing elytra on an anvil and brewing Potions of Slow Falling.
