Potion of Night Vision: Golden Carrot Recipe and Best Uses

A Potion of Night Vision lights up everything around you as if it were noon, for 3 minutes or 8 minutes with redstone. Brew it by adding a golden carrot to an Awkward Potion. There is no level II, because full brightness can’t get brighter.

A golden carrot is a carrot surrounded by eight gold nuggets. Higher-level farmer villagers also sell them, which is handy if you already have a trading hall. Always do the redstone step. Eight minutes for one extra redstone dust is a great deal.

What Night Vision changes

Your screen renders at full light everywhere: caves, the night sky, the Nether, the ocean floor. It does nothing for mob spawning. Mobs still spawn in the dark spots you can now see perfectly, so you still need torches for anything permanent.

Underwater it is even better. Night Vision clears the murky blue fog a lot, and that is why it goes with Water Breathing as the standard pair for raiding an ocean monument.

The last 10 seconds flicker on and off. Treat that flicker as your cue to drink the next one.

Where it helps most

• Strip mining and caving. Ores stand out from far away, and cave systems become readable. Our mining guide covers where to dig once you can see.
• Building at night. No more guessing which block is which.
• Ocean exploration for shipwrecks, ruins and monuments.
• Nether travel, where lava glow makes everything orange and murky.

It is weak in the Deep Dark. The Darkness effect from shriekers and the Warden still darkens your screen in pulses, so don’t rely on it in an ancient city.
