Minecraft Mining Guide: Best Y Level for Every Ore

Diamonds peak around Y -59, iron at Y 16, gold at Y -16. This Minecraft mining guide covers ore levels, branch mining vs caving, pickaxe tiers and lava.

Chart of the best Y levels for each ore in Minecraft: coal 44, 95 and 136, copper 48, iron 16 and 232, gold -16, redstone and diamond -59, ancient debris 15 in the Nether.

Every ore in Minecraft 1.18 and later has its own depth range, and mining at the right Y level makes a bigger difference than any enchantment. Diamonds are most common near the bottom of the world, around Y -59. Iron peaks at Y 16 (and again high in mountains). Gold peaks at Y -16. Press F3 in Java, or turn on Show Coordinates in Bedrock’s world settings, to see your Y level.

The table and diagram on this page give the targets. The rest of this guide covers how to mine efficiently once you’re there.

Ore levels in 1.21

Ore Range Best level Notes
Coal 0 to 320 Y 95 Very common in mountains; less below Y 0
Copper -16 to 112 Y 48 Huge veins in dripstone caves
Iron -64 to 320 Y 16, or Y 232 in mountains Two peaks; small amounts everywhere
Lapis lazuli -64 to 64 Y 0 Often buried with no air around it
Gold -64 to 32 Y -16 Badlands add gold from Y 32 up to 256
Redstone -64 to 15 Y -59 Gets more common the deeper you go
Diamond -64 to 16 Y -59 Less likely to touch air, so caving finds fewer
Emerald -16 to 320 Y 236 Mountain biomes only
Ancient debris Nether 8 to 119 Y 15 Almost always fully buried

Every ore below Y 0 generates as its deepslate version. Deepslate ores drop the same items but take longer to mine.

For the details on each, see finding diamonds, finding iron, finding redstone and finding ancient debris.

Pickaxe tiers

Pickaxe Can mine
Wood or gold Stone, coal, Nether gold ore, Nether quartz
Stone Iron, copper, lapis
Iron Gold, redstone, diamond, emerald
Diamond Obsidian, crying obsidian, ancient debris, respawn anchors
Netherite Everything diamond can, faster and with more durability

A gold pickaxe mines very fast but only at wood tier and has just 32 uses. Skip it. Go straight from stone to iron as soon as you have 3 ingots.

Branch mining

Branch mining is the reliable way to find buried ores like diamonds and lapis that rarely touch caves.

  1. Go down to your target Y. For diamonds, Y -58 or -59 keeps you just above the bedrock layers, which start at Y -64.
  2. Dig a main tunnel, 2 blocks tall, straight in one direction.
  3. Every few blocks, dig side branches off it. Leave 2 solid blocks between each branch. With a 1-wide tunnel, that spacing lets you see every block in between without digging it.
  4. Branches can be 20 to 50 blocks long. Light them as you go.

It’s slow but safe, and you always know your way back: walk to the main tunnel, follow it home.

Caving

Caves and ravines expose huge amounts of ore at once. Since 1.18 they’re enormous, and the bottom of a big cave at Y -50 or so can show you diamonds, redstone and iron within minutes. The trade-off is danger: more mobs, long drops and lava.

Make caving safer with:

  • A potion of night vision, so you can see everything without placing a torch every few steps.
  • Torches as you go, and on one side only (say, the right wall on the way in) so you always know the way out.
  • A water bucket for falls and fires.
  • A shield, since skeletons and cave spiders are the main threats.

Branch mining or caving?

Caving is faster for most ores, especially iron, copper, coal and redstone, which are fine near air. Diamonds and ancient debris are much less likely to generate touching air, so for them branch mining wins. A practical routine is to cave until you’ve emptied the visible ore, then branch mine around Y -58 for diamonds.

Enchantments that pay off

  • Efficiency speeds up every block. Efficiency V is the single biggest upgrade for branch mining.
  • Fortune multiplies drops from coal, copper, lapis, redstone, diamond, emerald and quartz ores. Fortune III gives about 2.2 diamonds per ore on average.
  • Silk Touch drops the ore block itself. Use it to store ores and Fortune them later, or to grab glass and ice.
  • Mending with Unbreaking III keeps your main pick alive forever, fed by the XP from ores.

Fortune and Silk Touch can’t go on the same tool, so keep two pickaxes.

Staying alive down there

  • Lava is the number-one killer. Below about Y -55, cave pockets fill with lava instead of air. Never dig straight down, and stop when you hear lava popping.
  • Don’t dig straight up either. Gravel or sand above you can fall and suffocate you.
  • Watch for the Deep Dark. Dark gray sculk blocks mean you’re near an ancient city and the Warden. Sneak, or leave; see the Deep Dark biome guide.
  • Mineshafts are worth a detour for rails, chests and exposed ore, but come with cave spider spawners; see mineshaft.

Faster, later

Once you have a beacon, Haste II plus an Efficiency V diamond or netherite pickaxe breaks stone instantly, which turns branch mining into a sprint. TNT is also a real option: blocks destroyed by TNT drop as items, and in the Nether it’s the standard way to expose ancient debris at Y 15.

Common questions

What is the best Y level for mining in general?

Around Y -54 to -58 if diamonds are the goal, since redstone and some gold come along too. For iron, Y 16 is better. There is no single level that suits every ore.

Should I use Fortune or Silk Touch?

Fortune on the pickaxe you use for diamond, coal, lapis, redstone, copper and emerald ore. Silk Touch is for collecting blocks like glass, ice and ore blocks you want to place. Most players carry one of each.

What's the fastest way to mine stone?

An Efficiency V diamond or netherite pickaxe with Haste II from a beacon breaks stone instantly. Deepslate is still slower.
