How to Download Minecraft on Chromebook (School Devices)
Minecraft for Chromebook is Bedrock Edition from Google Play. Check your Chromebook qualifies, install it, school Chromebooks, and speed tips.
Minecraft on a Chromebook comes from Google Play. It’s Bedrock Edition, the same game as on Android, Xbox and Switch, so you can play with friends on those devices once you sign in with a Microsoft account. Your Chromebook needs Play Store support, a reasonably recent ChromeOS and a 64-bit processor.
Check your Chromebook first
Open Settings > Apps and look for Google Play Store. If it’s there and turned on, you’re most of the way. If there’s no Play Store option at all, the model can’t run Android apps and Minecraft won’t install.
At launch in 2023, Mojang listed ChromeOS 111 as the minimum, with x86_64 or arm64 processors recommended. Update ChromeOS before you buy (Settings > About ChromeOS > Check for updates). Google Play only shows the buy button on devices that meet the requirements, which is a decent safety net.
Installing
- Open Google Play and search for “Minecraft”. On a Chromebook the listing should show the Chromebook version from Mojang.
- Buy and install it. If you already own Minecraft on Android with the same Google account, the listing may show an upgrade price instead of the full price.
- Launch it from the app shelf and sign in with your Microsoft account for multiplayer, Realms and the Marketplace.
Payment works the same way as on an Android phone. If you’re buying from Bangladesh, the payment notes in how to download Minecraft on Android apply here too.
School and work Chromebooks
On a managed Chromebook, the administrator decides whether the Play Store exists. Clicking around settings won’t change that, and “unblocked Minecraft” sites are pirated copies you shouldn’t trust with a school login.
Two legitimate options:
- Ask your teacher whether the school has Minecraft Education. It runs on Chromebooks and is licensed through the school. Start with Minecraft Education download and licensing.
- Play Minecraft Classic in the browser on a personal device. It’s free, but it needs a keyboard and only covers the 2009 creative mode.
Performance tips
Chromebooks vary a lot. On a low-end model, drop render distance to 6-8 chunks, switch off fancy graphics, and close other tabs and Android apps. A mouse helps more than you’d expect, because touchpad building is slow. The Bedrock Edition guide covers controls and features, and the download hub has guides for every other device.
Common questions
Can Chromebooks run Java Edition?
Not officially. Some people install it through ChromeOS's Linux environment, but Mojang doesn't support that and performance on typical Chromebooks is poor. The Google Play version is the supported route.
Why can't I install Minecraft on my school Chromebook?
School administrators usually disable the Play Store or block games. That is a device policy you can't legitimately get around; ask whether the school uses Minecraft Education instead.
Does my Android purchase work on a Chromebook?
Minecraft for Chromebook launched as its own Google Play listing in 2023, with a discounted upgrade for people who already owned the Android version on the same Google account. Check the listing on your Chromebook for the current price.
