Best Minecraft Mods for Beginners: Sodium, Maps and More

Start with Sodium for FPS, a minimap, a tooltip mod and AppleSkin. The best Minecraft mods for beginners improve the game without replacing it.

By minecraft.bd Editorial Team·Updated

The best mods for a first-time modder are ones that make Minecraft run better and tell you more, without turning it into a different game: Sodium for performance, a minimap, a tooltip mod that shows what you’re looking at, and AppleSkin for food. Add content mods once you’re comfortable. Everything below is free on Modrinth or CurseForge for Java Edition. Check each mod’s page for your game version and loader before downloading.

If you haven’t set up a loader yet, start with how to install Minecraft mods.

Performance first

Sodium rewrites Minecraft’s rendering engine. On most computers it raises FPS a lot, especially on laptops and integrated graphics. It runs on Fabric and NeoForge. If you only ever install one mod, make it this one.

Lithium speeds up game logic (mob AI, physics, block ticking) without changing behavior. It helps most in singleplayer worlds with farms and on servers.

FerriteCore cuts memory use, which matters on computers with 8 GB of RAM or less and in bigger modpacks.

For the settings side of performance, our lag guide covers render distance, simulation distance and memory allocation.

Information mods

Jade shows a small tooltip with the name of the block or mob under your crosshair, plus details like crop growth and furnace progress. It’s the modern successor to the old WAILA and HWYLA mods.

AppleSkin adds saturation and exhaustion to your hunger bar and shows how much each food restores. Once you can see saturation, you’ll stop eating bread when you have steak.

Xaero’s Minimap and Xaero’s World Map are the classic pair: a corner minimap with waypoints and a full-screen map of everywhere you’ve been. JourneyMap is a solid alternative that does both in one mod.

Mod Menu (Fabric) adds a Mods button to the title screen so you can see what’s loaded and open each mod’s settings.

Looks

Iris loads shader packs for real-time shadows and lighting, and works with Sodium. It can run almost all shader packs made for OptiFine. Our shaders guide has setup steps and picks by hardware.

First content mods

When vanilla-plus feels normal, these add new things to do without overwhelming you:

  • Create. Rotating machines, conveyor belts and contraptions built from gears and shafts. The main version is for NeoForge and Forge, with a separate community Fabric port. It’s the one mod most players recommend everyone try once.
  • Farmer’s Delight. New crops, cooking pots and dozens of meals that fit the vanilla style.
  • Waystones. Craftable fast-travel stones, which make big worlds much nicer.
  • Terralith. New terrain and biomes that still look like Minecraft. It’s a data pack under the hood, so it also works without a loader, but only in new chunks or new worlds.

Content mods add blocks to your world, so back up before adding them and don’t remove them later from a world you care about.

Modpacks

A modpack is a ready-made bundle of mods with configs tuned to work together. Install one through the Modrinth App or CurseForge app and the right loader comes with it. Start with a light “vanilla-plus” pack before trying a 300-mod kitchen-sink pack; the big ones need a decent PC and plenty of RAM. For which loader a pack uses and why, see Forge vs Fabric.

Common questions

Is OptiFine still worth using?

For most players, no. Sodium gives better performance on modern versions and Iris runs nearly all OptiFine shader packs. OptiFine still exists, but it doesn't work alongside Sodium and is awkward with Fabric and NeoForge mods.

Do these mods work on servers?

Client-side mods like Sodium, Iris, AppleSkin and minimaps work on almost any server. Content mods such as Create need the server to run them too. Some servers ban minimaps that show other players, so check the rules.

What is the first mod I should install?

Sodium. It makes the game run noticeably faster with no change to gameplay, and almost every other mod works alongside it.
