Wither Skeleton in Minecraft: Skull Drop Rates and Farms

Wither skeletons spawn in Nether fortresses and drop the skulls you need to summon the Wither. Skull drop odds with Looting, the Wither effect, and farms.

By minecraft.bd Editorial Team·Updated
Wither Skeleton stats in Minecraft: health 20 HP (10 hearts); damage (stone sword) Java 5 / 8 / 12 HP, Bedrock 5.5 / 9 / 13.5 HP; effect Wither for 10 seconds; spawns Nether fortresses, light level 0-7; height About 2.4 blocks; xp 5.

Wither skeletons are the tall, black skeletons of Nether fortresses. They carry stone swords, hit for 8 on Normal, and every hit gives you the Wither effect, which turns your hearts black and can finish you off. They’re also the only source of wither skeleton skulls, and you need three of those to summon the Wither.

Where to find wither skeletons

Only in Nether fortresses, at light level 7 or less. Java spawns them in groups of five, Bedrock in twos and threes. On open fortress bridges and in the corridors they mix with blazes and regular skeletons. They don’t spawn in soul sand valleys or the rest of the Nether.

Their height is the key to fighting them. At 2.4 blocks tall, they can’t walk through a two-block-high gap. Dig a small hideout into the fortress wall with a two-high opening and you can stand inside and hit them while they can’t reach in.

Dealing with the Wither effect

Wither drains 1 HP every 2 seconds for 10 seconds, and unlike poison it can kill you. Milk clears it. On Hard, a few hits stacked on a low health bar is how fortress trips go wrong, so:

  • Wear at least iron armor, ideally diamond.
  • Use Smite, which does big extra damage to all undead. A Smite V sword kills them in two hits.
  • Bring a bucket of milk and food.
  • Back off when your hearts go black and let the effect run out before you go back in.

They also chase piglins, so a fight sometimes comes to you if you’re near a bastion edge.

Skull drop rates

Skulls drop on 2.5% of kills by a player or tamed wolf. Looting helps a lot:

Looting Java Bedrock
None 2.5% 2.5%
III 5.5% 8.5%

That’s around 55 kills per skull on Java at Looting III, so about 165 for a full Wither. A charged creeper explosion always drops one, though getting a charged creeper into a fortress is its own project.

Other drops: 0-2 bones, sometimes coal (33% on Java, 50% on Bedrock), and on Bedrock occasionally its stone sword.

Farming them

Most players start by camping a busy fortress corridor with a Looting III Smite sword from a two-high hideout. The next step is a proper farm: clear the fortress area, cut down spots where blazes and other mobs can spawn, and funnel the wither skeletons into a kill area. It’s a big build, but it fills chests with bones, coal and skulls.

Edition differences

  • Group sizes are 5 on Java and 2-3 on Bedrock.
  • Skull drop rate with Looting III is higher on Bedrock (8.5% vs 5.5%).
  • When a Bedrock Wither drops below half health it summons wither skeletons as reinforcements.

The boss they help summon is on the Wither page, and the rest of the Nether is on the mobs hub.

Common questions

What is the drop rate of a wither skeleton skull?

2.5% per kill by a player or tamed wolf, plus 1% per level of Looting on Java (5.5% with Looting III). On Bedrock, Looting III raises it to 8.5%. A charged creeper explosion always drops one.

Where do wither skeletons spawn?

Only in Nether fortresses, at light level 7 or lower. Outside the fortress's actual rooms and bridges, they only spawn on nether bricks.

Can wither skeletons fit through a two-block gap?

No. They're about 2.4 blocks tall, so a hiding spot with a two-block-high entrance keeps them out.
