Endermite in Minecraft: Why It Spawns and How Farms Use It

An endermite has a 5% chance to spawn when you throw an ender pearl. Endermen attack it on sight from 64 blocks away, so enderman farms use it as bait.

An endermite is a tiny purple bug that sometimes spawns when you throw an ender pearl. On its own it’s a minor nuisance with 8 health and a weak bite. Its real value is as bait: endermen attack endermites on sight from up to 64 blocks away, which is the basis of most enderman farms.

Where endermites come from

Every ender pearl you throw has a 5% chance of producing an endermite. In Java it appears where you were standing when the pearl landed; in Bedrock it appears where the pearl landed. They never spawn any other way without commands.

Unnamed endermites despawn after two minutes, whether you’re nearby or not, so the one you got by accident usually takes care of itself.

Fighting an endermite

It chases you from 16 blocks and nibbles for 2 damage. Any sword kills it in one or two hits. It’s an arthropod, so Bane of Arthropods works, though you’ll never need it.

In Java, attacking one endermite makes other nearby endermites turn on whatever hit it. Bedrock endermites don’t do that, but they do attack endermen.

Using one as enderman bait

Endermen hate endermites. In the End, where endermen spawn constantly, a farm usually works like this:

  1. Throw pearls until an endermite spawns.
  2. Name it with a name tag so it never despawns.
  3. Trap it in a minecart or a small enclosure the endermen can see but can’t reach.
  4. Endermen walk toward it and fall into the farm’s kill chamber.

The endermite pulls endermen toward the farm’s drop point, so you get more pearls and XP per hour. Keep it out of the endermen’s reach, or they’ll kill it.

Common questions

How do you get an endermite?

Throw ender pearls. Each pearl you throw has a 5% chance of spawning one when it lands.

How do you keep an endermite from despawning?

Give it a name with a name tag. Unnamed endermites despawn after two minutes no matter what, even inside a minecart.

What does an endermite drop?

Only 3 XP. It has no item drops.
