Can You Play Minecraft Offline? Yes, After One Sign-In
Yes. Once Minecraft is installed and you've signed in once, single-player works offline on Java and Bedrock. What to do first, LAN play, and limits.
Yes. Once Minecraft is installed and you’ve signed in at least once, you can play single-player worlds without any internet connection, on both Java and Bedrock. You need internet for the download, the first sign-in, updates, and anything online: servers, Realms and the Marketplace.
That matters if your connection drops often, or if you play on a laptop while traveling.
Java Edition offline
- While you’re still online, open the Minecraft Launcher, sign in, and press Play once so the current version downloads fully.
- Next time you’re offline, open the launcher. If it can’t reach the internet, it shows an offline option and lets you start any version you’ve already downloaded.
- Play your single-player worlds as normal.
What you lose offline: your skin may show as a default skin, you can’t join servers, and the launcher can’t download a new version. If the launcher refuses to start at all, our Minecraft won’t launch page covers the usual fixes.
Bedrock Edition offline
On Windows, consoles, phones and tablets, Bedrock remembers your sign-in and license. Launch it once online, then it will start offline and open your worlds.
A few things to know:
- Marketplace content you’ve bought (skins, texture packs, worlds) needs to be downloaded while online. After that it works offline.
- Achievements may not sync until you reconnect.
- Consoles have their own online checks. On Xbox, setting the console as your “home Xbox” helps games you own start offline. On Switch and PlayStation, the game generally runs offline after installation.
- Very long offline stretches can cause some platforms to ask you to reconnect to verify the license.
Playing together without internet
Local multiplayer works with no internet, as long as everyone is on the same Wi-Fi or network:
- Java: one player opens a world, presses Esc, and chooses Open to LAN. Others see it in their Multiplayer list.
- Bedrock: worlds have “Visible to LAN players” on by default. Friends on the same network see it in the Friends tab.
Each player needs their own copy of the game and must have signed in before. For playing over the internet, see how to play multiplayer.
Before you go offline
Run a quick checklist while you still have a connection: update the game, download any Marketplace packs you want, and launch it once. Then you’re set.
Common questions
Do I need internet to play Minecraft?
Only to download the game, sign in the first time, and play online. After that, single-player works offline on both Java and Bedrock.
Can I play with friends without internet?
Yes, if you're on the same local network. Java's Open to LAN and Bedrock's local multiplayer both work over home Wi-Fi without an internet connection, as long as everyone is signed in already.
Why does Minecraft ask me to sign in when I'm offline?
The game needs to have checked your license at least once on that device. Connect once, launch the game, then go offline again.
