How to Make Stone Walls in Minecraft: Every Wall Recipe
Six cobblestone in two rows make 6 walls, and every wall uses that layout. How to make stone walls in Minecraft, the stonecutter shortcut and mob-proofing.

Fill two full rows of a crafting table with 6 cobblestone to make 6 cobblestone walls. Every other wall uses the same layout with its own block: 6 stone bricks make 6 stone brick walls, 6 cobbled deepslate make 6 cobbled deepslate walls, and so on. The recipe is identical on Java and Bedrock.
One thing that surprises people: there’s no wall made from plain stone or smooth stone. When someone says “stone wall”, the game’s options are cobblestone, mossy cobblestone, stone brick and mossy stone brick.
Every wall you can make
Each of these takes 6 of the matching block for 6 walls:
| Family | Walls |
|---|---|
| Cobblestone and stone | Cobblestone, mossy cobblestone, stone brick, mossy stone brick |
| Overworld stones | Granite, diorite, andesite |
| Deepslate | Cobbled deepslate, polished deepslate, deepslate brick, deepslate tile |
| Tuff | Tuff, polished tuff, tuff brick |
| Bricks and mud | Brick, mud brick, resin brick |
| Sandstone | Sandstone, red sandstone |
| Cinnabar (Java 26.2 / Bedrock 26.30) | Cinnabar, polished cinnabar, cinnabar brick |
| Sulfur (Java 26.2 / Bedrock 26.30) | Sulfur, polished sulfur, sulfur brick |
| Ocean and Nether | Prismarine, nether brick, red nether brick |
| Blackstone and End | Blackstone, polished blackstone, polished blackstone brick, end stone brick |
That’s 32 wall types. Note what’s missing: no smooth stone, no polished granite, diorite or andesite, no smooth sandstone, and no wooden walls (wood gets fences instead).
For mossy versions, craft the mossy block first (cobblestone or stone bricks plus a vine or moss block), then make walls from that. For stone brick walls, our stone bricks guide covers getting the bricks.
The stonecutter shortcut
A stonecutter turns 1 block into 1 wall. That’s the same 1:1 ratio as crafting, but you can make walls in any number instead of batches of 6, and you can skip steps. Put plain stone in a stonecutter and you can pick stone brick walls directly, without crafting the bricks first. Since Java 26.1 and Bedrock 26.10, stone also cuts into cobblestone and its variants, so stone gets you cobblestone walls too.
How walls behave
Height. A wall is drawn 1 block tall but blocks movement like a 1.5-block barrier, the same as a fence. Players and nearly all mobs can’t jump over it. Spiders climb it, skeletons shoot over it, and camels can step over it, so it’s not a perfect defense on its own.
Connections. Walls join up with other walls next to them, plus glass panes, iron bars and fence gates. They don’t connect to fences. On Bedrock they also connect to glass blocks and trapdoors.
Posts. A wall shows a thick center post at corners, at the ends of a line, and where something sits on top of it, such as a torch, banner, pressure plate or block. A straight run with nothing on top flattens into a continuous wall without posts. If you want posts at regular intervals for looks, put a torch or block on top at those spots.
Gates. A fence gate between two walls sits a little lower so it lines up with them. Use it as the door in a wall around a farm or village.
Where to use them
Walls are the default border for anything mobs shouldn’t get into: animal pens, crop fields, village perimeters. Cobblestone walls are the cheapest, since cobblestone is the block you have most of. For looks, stone brick and deepslate brick walls are the usual castle choice, and mixing in mossy variants makes a wall look older. A wall with a slab on top also makes a good railing for a balcony or bridge.

Common questions
Can you make a wall out of smooth stone or plain stone?
No. There is no plain stone wall or smooth stone wall. Cobblestone, mossy cobblestone, stone brick and mossy stone brick walls are the closest options.
Can mobs jump over walls?
No. A wall is 1.5 blocks tall for collision, so players and most mobs can't jump it. Spiders can still climb it, and skeletons can shoot over it.
Do walls connect to fences?
Not directly. Walls connect to each other, to glass panes, iron bars and fence gates, but not to fences.
