Minecraft crafting recipe for stone bricks: top row stone, stone, empty; middle row stone, stone, empty; bottom row empty, empty, empty. Makes 4 stone bricks.
Crafting table layout. Empty squares stay empty.

Put 4 stone blocks in a 2x2 square and you get 4 stone bricks. It fits in the inventory grid. The catch is that “stone” here means plain stone, the gray block you get by smelting cobblestone, not cobblestone itself. (Smelt stone a second time and you get smooth stone, a different block that won’t work here.)

Step 1: get stone

Mining stone with a normal pickaxe gives you cobblestone. To turn it back into stone:

  1. Put cobblestone in a furnace with fuel.
  2. Each cobblestone smelts into 1 stone.

Or skip the furnace: a pickaxe with Silk Touch drops stone directly. If you have one, a quick mining trip gives you stacks.

Step 2: craft or cut

Craft 4 stone into 4 stone bricks, one-for-one. A stonecutter does the same one at a time and also turns stone straight into stone brick stairs, slabs and walls without crafting bricks first. For stairs that matters: the crafting recipe takes 6 blocks for 4 stairs, the stonecutter takes 1 for 1.

The variants

Variant How to make it
Mossy stone bricks Stone bricks + vine or moss block (shapeless)
Cracked stone bricks Smelt stone bricks in a furnace
Chiseled stone bricks 2 stone brick slabs stacked vertically, or 1 stone in a stonecutter

Mixing all four in one wall is the quickest way to make a build look old. Use mostly plain bricks, then scatter mossy near the ground and cracked near corners.

Mossy and plain stone bricks each have their own stairs, slabs and walls. Cracked and chiseled don’t.

Where you’ll see them in the wild

Strongholds are built almost entirely from stone brick variants, and ocean ruins, igloo basements and trail ruins use them too. Breaking those gives you bricks for free, but be careful in strongholds: some of the blocks are infested. An infested block breaks quickly and releases a silverfish.

Silverfish don’t only use naturally generated blocks. A silverfish that isn’t attacking can burrow into stone, cobblestone or stone bricks near it, including blocks you placed. In practice that only matters if silverfish are loose near your base, which usually means you brought them back from a stronghold or a mountain.

Stone bricks vs bricks

Despite the name, stone bricks and red bricks have nothing in common in crafting: one comes from smelted cobblestone, the other from smelted clay. Stone bricks are the gray castle look; bricks are the red house look.

Common questions

Can you make stone bricks from cobblestone?

Not directly. Smelt cobblestone into stone first, then craft 4 stone into 4 stone bricks.

How do you make mossy stone bricks?

Craft a stone brick with a vine or a moss block. The recipe is shapeless and gives 1 mossy stone brick.

Can silverfish hide in player-placed stone bricks?

Yes. An idle silverfish can burrow into nearby stone, cobblestone and stone bricks, including ones you placed, as long as mob griefing is on.
