How to Make a Sticky Piston in Minecraft and What It Pulls

Put a slimeball directly above a piston to craft a sticky piston. How to make a sticky piston in Minecraft, find slimeballs, and use pulling in builds.

By minecraft.bd Editorial Team·Updated

Place a slimeball directly above a piston in any crafting grid, including the 2x2 grid in your inventory. You get one sticky piston. The recipe is shaped: the slimeball has to sit on top of the piston, not beside it.

You need a normal piston first (planks, cobblestone, an iron ingot and redstone dust). The piston page covers that recipe and the rules about which blocks can be pushed; this page is about what the slime changes.

Getting slimeballs

Slimeballs are the bottleneck. Your options:

  • Slimes in swamps at night, between Y 51 and 69. Most active on a full moon.
  • Slimes in slime chunks below Y 40, any time of day. One in ten chunks is a slime chunk.
  • Wandering traders sometimes sell slimeballs for an emerald.
  • Baby pandas occasionally sneeze one out.

If you’re going to build a lot of redstone, set up a slime farm. The slime mob page explains how they split and which size drops slimeballs.

Pulling vs pushing

A normal piston pushes a block and lets go. A sticky piston pushes it and then pulls it back when the signal stops. That’s the whole difference, and it’s what makes doors possible: the block slides out of the way and returns to close the gap.

A few rules:

  • It pulls only the block touching its face. If that block is a slime or honey block, everything stuck to it comes back too.
  • It can’t pull blocks that pistons can’t move, like obsidian.
  • In Java Edition, if you give it a very short pulse (shorter than the time it takes to extend), it pushes the block and leaves it behind instead of pulling. Players call this “spitting” the block, and some door designs use it on purpose.

Builds that need sticky pistons

  • Piston doors. The classic 2x2 hidden door uses four sticky pistons. Our piston doors guide walks through it.
  • Hidden staircases that slide out of a wall.
  • Flying machines, where sticky pistons and slime blocks drag each other forward. The moving car guide uses the same idea.
  • Retractable bridges and floors that open over a trap.

For anything that only needs to push once (crop harvesters, item pushers), a normal piston is cheaper and saves your slimeballs.

Common questions

Can you make a sticky piston without a slimeball?

No. In both Java and Bedrock the only recipe is a piston plus a slimeball. Honey can't replace it.

Is a sticky piston better than a normal piston?

Only when you need the block pulled back, like in doors. For pushing jobs such as crop harvesters, a normal piston is cheaper and does the same work.

Where do you get slimeballs early?

Kill slimes in swamps at night or in slime chunks underground. Pandas sneezing and wandering traders are less reliable sources.
