Axolotl in Minecraft: Breeding and the 1-in-1,200 Blue One
Axolotls spawn in lush cave water and fight drowned and guardians for you. Catch one with a bucket, breed them with tropical fish, and hope for a blue one.

Axolotls are passive aquatic mobs that spawn in the water of lush caves. You catch them with a water bucket, breed them with buckets of tropical fish, and take them along on underwater fights, where they attack drowned and guardians and give you Regeneration when you finish the kill.

Where axolotls spawn
Axolotls need a lush cave and a specific setup: water with clay somewhere in the few blocks underneath. Clay is common on lush cave pool floors, so if you find the biome you’ll usually find axolotls. The easiest way to spot lush caves from the surface is an azalea tree, which has the biome below its roots.
They come in four natural colors: pink (leucistic), brown, gold and cyan. The fifth, blue, only appears through breeding.
Catching and carrying
Use a water bucket on an axolotl to scoop it up. Bucketed axolotls don’t despawn when you release them, which makes this the safe way to move them to a home pool. In Java you can even rename the bucket in an anvil and the axolotl inside keeps the name.
On land an axolotl wanders back toward water at least two blocks deep. If there’s none within 16 blocks it gets lost and dries out after five minutes. Rain keeps it alive, and a splash water bottle tops it back up.
Fighting with them
Axolotls hunt drowned, guardians, elder guardians, squid, glow squid and fish, preferring hostile targets. When you kill a mob they were fighting, they clear your Mining Fatigue and give you Regeneration I for five seconds per axolotl involved. That combination is exactly what you want in an ocean monument, where elder guardians pile Mining Fatigue on you.
When badly hurt, an axolotl plays dead: it sinks to the floor for ten seconds with Regeneration, and hostile mobs ignore it. Bring three or four and let them rotate.
In Java, the Regeneration bonus caps at two minutes. Bedrock has no cap.
Breeding and the blue variant
Hold a bucket of tropical fish and axolotls follow you. Feed two adults and you get a baby, 1-7 XP, and you keep the water bucket. The parents can breed again after five minutes in Java or one minute in Bedrock, which makes Bedrock much faster for blue hunting.
Each baby has a 1 in 1,200 chance to be blue. You’ll burn through a lot of tropical fish, so set up somewhere with warm ocean nearby, or a small fish pond you can refill.
Killing an axolotl gives nothing but a single XP orb. They’re worth far more alive.
Common questions
How rare is a blue axolotl?
Blue axolotls never spawn naturally. Each baby from breeding has a 1 in 1,200 chance of being blue, otherwise it copies one parent's color.
What do axolotls eat?
You breed and feed them with a bucket of tropical fish. Catch a tropical fish in a water bucket to make one.
Can axolotls live out of water?
For a while. They wander on land but dry out and die after about five minutes without water, unless it's raining.
