Horse in Minecraft: Stats, Breeding Faster Horses and Armor
Every horse rolls its own speed, jump and health, and a bred one can be three times faster. How horse stats work, all 35 coats, armor, breeding for speed.

Horses are the fastest ordinary mount in Minecraft, but no two are the same. Each horse rolls its own health, speed and jump height when it spawns, so the horse you happen to tame first might be slow, and a well-bred one can run three times as fast. Horses spawn in plains and savannas and can wear horse armor.
| Stat | Range | Average |
|---|---|---|
| Health | 15-30 | 22.5 |
| Speed | 4.9-14.6 blocks/s | 9.7 blocks/s |
| Jump | 1.1-5.9 blocks | about 3.1 blocks |
| Detail | Value |
|---|---|
| Behavior | Passive |
| Spawns | Plains and savannas (herds of 2-6), village stables |
| Breeding food | Golden carrot, golden apple |
| Drops | 0-2 leather, plus saddle and armor if equipped; 1-3 XP |
For reference, you walk at about 4.3 blocks per second and sprint at 5.6, so even a mediocre horse beats running.
Coats and markings
Horses have seven base colors (white, creamy, chestnut, brown, black, gray, dark brown) and five marking patterns (none, white stockings and blaze, white field, white spots, black dots). That’s 35 combinations. Every horse in a herd shares a color but can have different markings. Coat has no effect on stats.
Taming and riding
You tame a horse by climbing on with an empty hand until it stops bucking you off and shows hearts. Then it needs a saddle before you can steer. Our full horse taming guide covers the steps, foods that speed taming up, and how to judge a horse before you commit.
When riding, the jump bar replaces your XP bar: hold jump longer for a higher leap. Horses climb one-block steps automatically, take reduced fall damage, and in Java let you pass through a Nether portal without dismounting. In Bedrock you can’t use portals while mounted.
Horse armor
Horses have an armor slot. Leather, iron, gold and diamond horse armor exist; only leather can be crafted, and the rest come from chests in dungeons, temples, strongholds and similar loot rooms. Diamond gives the most protection. Since health is fixed per horse, armor is the only way to make a fragile horse survive skeletons. Shears remove armor (then the saddle) in current versions.
Breeding faster horses
Feed two tamed horses golden carrots or golden apples and they produce a foal. The foal’s stats start from the average of its parents’ and then shift by a random amount, so two fast parents usually give a fast foal, and occasionally a faster one. Breed your best two, keep the best foal, and repeat.
The game doesn’t show these numbers, so compare horses by timing each one over the same 100-block stretch of flat ground. Foals take 20 minutes to grow; golden carrots and apples speed that up.
Breed a horse with a donkey to get a mule, which can carry a chest but can’t breed.
Edition notes
Both editions use the same stat ranges. In Bedrock, a death message appears when any tamed horse is killed. Adult horses can’t ride in boats in either edition, but foals can.
Common questions
How fast can a Minecraft horse go?
Horse speed is random, from about 4.9 to 14.6 blocks per second. An average horse runs around 9.7 blocks per second, close to twice a sprinting player.
What do you feed horses to breed them?
Golden carrots or golden apples. Both horses must be tamed first.
How high can a horse jump?
Between about 1.1 and 5.9 blocks, depending on the horse's jump strength. Most horses clear two or three blocks.
