How to Install Texture Packs in Minecraft (Java and Bedrock)
On Java, drop the .zip in the resourcepacks folder and move it to Selected. On Bedrock, open the .mcpack. How to install texture packs and fix them.
On Java Edition, go to Options → Resource Packs → Open Pack Folder, drop the pack’s .zip file in, then move it from Available to Selected and click Done. On Bedrock (Windows, Android, iOS), open the .mcpack file so the game imports it, then turn it on under Settings → Global Resources or in a single world’s Resource Packs settings. Consoles get packs from the Marketplace only.
If you’re not sure what a resource pack is or which kind to download, the texture packs hub explains the basics.
Install texture packs on Java Edition
- Download a pack for Java. It should be a
.zip. Check the versions listed on its page and pick the one closest to your game version. - Open the folder. In Minecraft, go to Options → Resource Packs → Open Pack Folder. This opens the
resourcepacksfolder inside your game directory. - Drop the
.zipin. Don’t unzip it. (A pack that’s already an unzipped folder also works, as long aspack.mcmetasits directly inside it.) - Select it. Back in the game, the pack appears under Available. Hover over it and click the arrow to move it to Selected.
- Click Done and wait for the game to reload textures.
Stacking packs
You can select several packs at once. Packs higher in the Selected list override ones below them, so put a small change (say, a custom sword texture) above a full texture pack. Use the arrows to reorder.
If the pack doesn’t appear
- It’s zipped twice. Some downloads wrap the real pack in another
.zip. Open it; if you see a folder instead ofpack.mcmetaand anassetsfolder, extract that inner folder or zip intoresourcepacks. - It’s in the wrong folder. If you use a modded launcher or a custom game directory, each instance has its own
resourcepacksfolder. The launcher guide explains game directories. - It’s a Bedrock pack. A
.mcpackwon’t load on Java.
Install texture packs on Bedrock (Windows, Android, iOS)
- Download the
.mcpack(or.mcaddon) file. - Open it. On Windows, double-click it. On Android or iOS, tap it in your Files or Downloads app and choose to open it with Minecraft. The game starts and shows “Successfully imported”.
- Turn it on everywhere: Settings → Global Resources, find the pack under My Packs, and Activate it. This applies to every world.
- Or for one world only: edit the world, go to Resource Packs, find it under Available and Activate it. Anyone joining that world gets the pack too.
If a pack arrives as a .zip instead, try renaming the extension to .mcpack before opening it. That works when the zip contains a manifest.json at the top level.
Consoles
Xbox, PlayStation and Switch can’t import pack files. Open the Marketplace, browse Texture Packs, and download free or paid packs there. Then activate them under Global Resources or in a world’s settings, the same as above.
Performance
High-resolution packs (128x and above) can cut your FPS sharply, especially on laptops and phones. If the game stutters after you add one, try the same pack at a lower resolution. Many authors offer 32x or 64x versions. Our lag guide covers other settings to check. On Java, packs pair nicely with shaders, which change lighting instead of textures.
Common questions
Why does my pack say 'Made for an older version of Minecraft'?
The pack's version number doesn't match your game. You can usually still use it; most textures will work, but anything the game changed since then may show as missing or default.
Do resource packs work on servers?
Yes, your own packs apply on any server because they only change what you see. Some servers also send their own pack when you join, which loads on top of yours.
Can I install texture packs on Xbox, PlayStation or Switch?
Only through the Marketplace. Consoles can't open .mcpack files, so free community packs from websites are limited to Windows, Android and iOS.
