Minecraft crafting recipe for brewing stand: top row empty, blaze rod, empty; middle row cobble, cobble, cobble; bottom row empty, empty, empty. Makes 1 brewing stand.
Crafting table layout. Empty squares stay empty.

Put 1 blaze rod in the center of the top row and 3 cobblestone across the middle row of a crafting table. That’s one brewing stand. The cobblestone is easy, and blackstone or cobbled deepslate work just as well. The blaze rod is the real cost: it only drops from blazes in the Nether.

Getting a blaze rod

Blazes live in Nether fortresses, the dark nether brick structures you’ll find by exploring the Nether. You need a Nether portal to get there.

Blazes fly, shoot fireballs in bursts of three and set you on fire, so prepare:

  • Bring a bow, or fight at a corner where they have to come close.
  • Snowballs damage blazes and are easy to carry in stacks.
  • Carry a few stacks of cobblestone to block fireballs and patch around you.
  • Wear any gold armor piece so piglins on the way don’t attack.

Each blaze drops 0 or 1 rod (more with Looting). Get several while you’re there. You’ll want at least one for the stand and more for fuel, and if you’re working toward the End you’ll need six more for eyes of ender. If you plan to brew a lot, a blaze farm is worth building on the fortress spawner.

Fuel

A brewing stand burns blaze powder. One blaze rod crafts into 2 powder, and each powder lasts 20 brews. Put it in the slot at the top left of the stand’s menu. Without fuel, nothing happens, and that’s the most common reason a new stand “doesn’t work”.

Using it

Water bottles go in the three bottom slots, the ingredient in the top slot. Every ingredient works on all three bottles at once. The full recipe tree, from awkward potions to splash and lingering potions, is in how to brew potions.

Hoppers can automate a stand: a hopper above feeds ingredients, one from the side feeds fuel or bottles, and one underneath pulls out finished potions.

Brewing stands and villagers

A brewing stand is the workstation for the cleric. Clerics sell redstone, lapis lazuli, glowstone, ender pearls and bottles o’ enchanting. Place a stand by an unemployed villager and it takes the job. That ender pearl trade is a handy backup if endermen are scarce when you’re gathering eyes of ender.

Finding one

Village churches, igloo basements and end ships sometimes have a brewing stand already in place. Break it with a pickaxe to take it with you, which can save a Nether trip early on.

Common questions

Can I use blackstone or deepslate instead of cobblestone?

Yes. Cobblestone, blackstone and cobbled deepslate all work, and you can mix them. That means you can craft a brewing stand in the Nether without bringing stone from home.

What fuels a brewing stand?

Blaze powder only. One powder lasts 20 brewing operations, and one blaze rod crafts into two powder.

Where can I find a brewing stand without crafting one?

Igloo basements, village churches (temples) and end ships can have one already placed. Breaking it with a pickaxe drops it as an item.
