How to Make a Glass Bottle in Minecraft and Fill It
Three glass blocks in a V make 3 glass bottles. How to make a glass bottle in Minecraft, fill it with water, honey or dragon's breath, and how many.

Place 3 glass blocks in a V shape: one in the top-left, one in the top-right and one in the center of a crafting table. That gives you 3 glass bottles. Plain glass only; stained glass and glass panes don’t work.
Making the glass
Glass is smelted sand (red sand works too). One sand gives one glass, so three sand and a bit of fuel is all you need. Our glass guide has more on where to find sand in bulk and the fastest way to smelt it.
Put the glass into the grid exactly like a V. It’s the same shape as a bucket, just with glass instead of iron, and it won’t work upside down.
Filling bottles
| What you use it on | What you get |
|---|---|
| Water source or flowing water | Water bottle |
| Full cauldron of water | Water bottle (a full cauldron fills 3) |
| Beehive or bee nest at full honey | Honey bottle |
| Dragon’s breath cloud in the End | Bottle of dragon’s breath |
Filling from water costs nothing: the water stays, so a one-block puddle in your brewing room is all the water you’ll ever need. Honey bottles need a full hive; light a campfire under it first or the bees attack. The honey guide shows a safe setup.
Why brewers need lots of them
Every potion starts as a water bottle in a brewing stand, and each stand holds three bottles at a time. Empty bottles stack to 64, so craft a few dozen at once if you brew regularly. Drinking a potion gives the bottle back, but splash and lingering potions break when thrown, so a PvP or raid kit uses bottles up quickly.
Dragon’s breath is a special case. You collect it from the purple cloud the Ender Dragon breathes during the fight, and it turns splash potions into lingering potions. Bring a dozen empty bottles to the End for that alone. Full brewing steps are on how to brew potions.
Small uses beyond brewing
- A water bottle used on dirt, coarse dirt or rooted dirt turns it into mud, which you need for mud bricks.
- Honey bottles cure poison and fill 6 hunger; four make a honey block.
- An empty bottle is the only way to pick up honey without breaking the hive, so keep a few in any base near bees.
Common questions
How do you fill a glass bottle with water?
Use the empty bottle on any water source or flowing water while holding it. The water isn't used up, so one source can fill as many bottles as you like.
Can you get glass bottles back after drinking a potion?
Yes. Drinking a potion, a honey bottle or a water bottle returns the empty bottle. Splash and lingering potions are thrown and don't come back.
Where else can you get glass bottles?
Witches drop them, and they show up in some chest loot. Crafting is much faster once you have sand and a furnace.
