How to Build a Blaze Farm in Minecraft for Rods and XP

Build a box around a Nether fortress blaze spawner so blazes come to you one at a time. Securing the spawner, the kill box, and light and mob-cap rules.

By minecraft.bd Editorial Team·Updated

A blaze farm is a box built around the blaze spawner in a Nether fortress so that blazes spawn, can’t shoot you, and come within sword reach one at a time. You stand behind a gap, hit them, and collect blaze rods and a lot of experience. It’s the only renewable source of blaze rods, and you need those for brewing and for eyes of ender.

Hunting blazes by hand gets you the six or seven rods you need to beat the game. Build a farm when you want stacks: a big potion setup, lots of eyes of ender, or an XP source for enchanting.

Find and secure the spawner

Blaze spawners sit on raised platforms inside Nether fortresses, usually surrounded by nether brick fences and stairs. You’ll know you’re close when several blazes are floating around one spot.

Before you build anything:

  1. Drink a Fire Resistance potion. It makes blaze fireballs and the fire they leave harmless. This is the single biggest safety step.
  2. Pause the spawner with torches. Blazes from a spawner appear only at block light 11 or lower. Put torches on top of the spawner and on the floor around it, and it stops spawning.
  3. Clear the area of other blazes and wither skeletons.

Building the kill box

The spawner spawns blazes in a rough box around itself, 9 blocks wide and a few blocks tall. The goal is to close that space in so blazes can’t fly off, and leave you one safe place to hit them from.

A simple version that works in both editions:

  • Wall in the spawner area with solid blocks (cobblestone or nether brick), leaving the inside open. Glass works too and lets you watch.
  • Pick one side for your kill spot. Build a small room there, outside the wall, and in the wall between you and the blazes leave a gap one block high at eye level. Blazes are taller than one block, so they can’t squeeze through, but you can swing your sword through it.
  • Blazes drift toward you because they target the player. When one lines up with the gap, hit it with your sword.

More advanced farms use slabs or trapdoors to push blazes down into a 1×1 chute, then have you hit only their feet. Those designs are faster, but they need careful measurements for your exact fortress. The simple box is good enough for most survival worlds.

When you’re done, remove the torches and step back to your kill spot.

Rules that make it work

Stay within 16 blocks. A spawner is only active when a player is within 16 blocks of it. Your kill room should be well inside that.

Kill steadily. A spawner stops working when too many of its mobs (six, on Java) are already in the area around it. If you let blazes pile up, spawning stalls until you thin them out.

Use Looting. A blaze drops 0 or 1 rod normally. Looting III raises the maximum to 4, which roughly doubles your rods per hour.

Keep the wall solid. Fireballs can’t pass through blocks, but they do set fire to anything flammable, so no wood or wool in the build.

What to do with the rods

Each rod crafts into 2 blaze powder. Powder fuels brewing stands and goes into eyes of ender and fire charges; rods themselves craft brewing stands. Our brewing guide covers what to do next. If you run out of uses, the farm still pays off as an XP grinder for an enchanting table or anvil repairs.

Common questions

Can you move a blaze spawner?

No. Spawners cannot be picked up in survival, even with Silk Touch, so the farm has to be built where the fortress put it.

How do I turn off a blaze spawner while I build?

Light it up. Blazes from a spawner only appear at a block light level of 11 or lower, so torches on and around the spawner pause it. Remove them when the farm is ready.

How many blaze rods does a blaze drop?

Zero or one when killed by a player, with each level of Looting raising the maximum by one. Looting III gives up to four per blaze.

Is a blaze farm good for XP?

Yes. Each blaze gives 10 experience, twice what most Overworld mobs give, so a working blaze farm is one of the quickest XP farms you can build early on.
