How to Get Out of a Boat in Minecraft on Every Platform

Press sneak: Left Shift on PC, B on Xbox and Switch, Circle on PlayStation, or tap dismount on mobile. How to get out of a boat, and get mobs out too.

By minecraft.bd Editorial Team·Updated

Press the sneak button. On a keyboard that’s Left Shift in both Java and Bedrock. On Xbox and Switch controllers press B, and on PlayStation press Circle. On a phone or tablet, tap the dismount button that appears on screen while you’re riding (the touch sneak button doesn’t work for this). You’ll step out next to the boat, and the boat stays where it is.

Controls by device

Device Button to get out
Java (PC, Mac, Linux) Left Shift (sneak)
Bedrock on Windows with keyboard Shift (sneak)
Xbox, Nintendo Switch B
PlayStation Circle
Android, iPhone, iPad Dismount button on screen

If you changed your controls, the button is whatever you set for Sneak. Check under Options > Controls > Key Binds on Java, or Settings > Keyboard & Mouse (or Controller) on Bedrock.

The same button gets you off minecarts, horses, pigs, camels and other mounts.

Where you end up

When you get out, the game looks for a safe spot next to the boat to put you on. If you parked against a shore or a dock, you’ll stand on land. In the middle of the ocean there’s nowhere to stand, so you’ll be swimming next to the boat. Getting back in is just a matter of using the boat again.

On land it’s the same: you step off to the side.

Picking the boat back up

Get out, then hit it a few times and it breaks into an item you can pick up. Since Bedrock 26.40, boats there have the same low health as on Java, so it only takes a couple of hits. A boat with a chest drops its contents when broken, so empty it first if you don’t want to chase items in the water.

Getting mobs and villagers out

Mobs never leave a boat on their own, and you can’t make them sneak. To get one out:

  • Break the boat. The mob is placed where it was sitting. This is the normal way to drop a villager at its new home.
  • Kill it, if it’s a hostile mob you trapped by accident.

For villagers specifically, sail or drag the boat to the exact spot you want, then break it. Once a villager is out it will wander, so close the gap with a block first if you’re filling a trading hall or a villager breeder. See the villager page for how they pick beds and workstations once they’re in place.

If you can’t get out

  • The key does nothing: check that Sneak hasn’t been unbound or changed to a key you don’t press. A few overlay apps also capture Shift.
  • Mobile, no button: the dismount button appears only while you’re riding. Its position depends on your touch layout, so look around the screen edges rather than at the sneak button.
  • Stuck in a hole or tunnel: if there’s no free space around the boat, mine a block next to you to make room, then press sneak again.

Boats are worth knowing well because they’re also the fastest way to travel on ice. If you’re building one, start with how to make a boat and then try an ice boat road.

Common questions

Why can't I get out of my boat?

Usually the sneak key has been rebound or another app is using Shift. On mobile, use the dismount button that appears on screen while you ride, not the sneak button.

How do you get a mob out of a boat?

Break the boat. Hit it a few times and it drops as an item, and the mob steps out where it was.

Do you fall in the water when you get out of a boat?

The game tries to put you on a nearby block if there's room. In open water with nothing around, you end up swimming next to the boat.
