How to Get 3rd Person in Minecraft on PC, Console, Mobile
Press F5 on PC to cycle three camera views. How to get 3rd person in Minecraft on console and mobile Bedrock, using Settings or the touch-screen button.
Press F5 on PC to get third person in Minecraft. Each press moves the camera through three views: first person, third person from behind, and third person from the front, then back to first person. On console or mobile Bedrock, open Settings > Video and change Camera Perspective, or turn on the touch-screen camera button so you can switch with a tap.
Java Edition (PC)
- F5 cycles the camera. On many laptops the F-keys are media keys by default, so press Fn + F5.
- If F5 doesn’t work, someone may have rebound it. Go to Options > Controls > Key Binds and look for Toggle Perspective.
Third person on Bedrock Edition
Bedrock covers Windows, consoles and phones, and each has its own easiest route.
| Device | How to switch |
|---|---|
| Windows (keyboard) | Press F5, the same as Java |
| Xbox, PlayStation, Switch | Settings > Video > Camera Perspective |
| Phone or tablet | Settings menu, or turn on the camera perspective button in the touch controls |
The settings route works on every device, so if you’re unsure, use that. The on-screen button is the handiest option on mobile, since you can flip between views mid-game.
The two third-person views
Back view puts the camera about four blocks behind you. It’s the useful one: you can see around corners, watch your character while parkouring, and keep an eye on what’s behind you while riding or flying an elytra.
Front view points the camera back at your face. It’s mostly for screenshots and checking how your skin and armor look, because you can’t see where you’re going.
Both views lose the crosshair, so aiming bows and placing blocks precisely is harder. Most players use third person for traveling and looking around and go back to first person for fighting and building.
Things that block the camera
The third-person camera can’t go through solid blocks. In a narrow tunnel or a small room, it snaps in close to your back, which can feel cramped. On Java, glass and plants like tall grass no longer block the view, but fences, ice and slime blocks still do. Stepping into an open area fixes it.
Taking clean screenshots
For a screenshot without the hotbar and hearts in the way:
- Java: press F1 to hide the HUD, then F2 to save a screenshot.
- Bedrock: turn on Hide HUD in the video settings, then use your device’s own screenshot button.
If the game stutters when you switch views, that’s usually rendering load rather than the camera itself. Fixing Minecraft lag covers the settings that help most. New to the controls in general? How to play Minecraft walks through the rest.
