Zombified Piglin in Minecraft: Anger, Drops and Gold Farms

Hit one zombified piglin and every one nearby attacks. How their group anger works, why they drop gold nuggets and rotten flesh, and gold farms.

By minecraft.bd Editorial Team·Updated
Zombified Piglin stats in Minecraft: health 20 HP (10 hearts), 2 armor; damage (golden sword) Java 5 / 8 / 12 HP, Bedrock 5.5 / 9 / 13.5 HP; spawns Nether wastes, crimson forests, fortresses; Overworld nether portals; drops 0-1 rotten flesh, 0-1 gold nugget, 2.5% gold ingot, golden sword; xp 5 adult, 12 baby; drop Chance (Java, no Looting).

Zombified piglins are the neutral undead that crowd the Nether wastes. They leave you alone as long as nobody hits one, but the moment you damage one and it survives, every zombified piglin nearby turns on you at once. They drop rotten flesh and gold nuggets, which makes them the base of every gold farm.

Stat Value
Health 20 HP (10 hearts), 2 armor

Drops 0-1 rotten flesh, 0-1 gold nugget, 2.5% gold ingot, golden sword
XP 5 adult, 12 baby

Where zombified piglins come from

Most spawn in the nether wastes, in groups, at block light 11 or lower. Fewer turn up in crimson forests and Nether fortresses. There are three other sources:

  • Nether portals in the Overworld. Portal blocks occasionally spawn one, more often on harder difficulties. A Nether portal left near your base will slowly collect them.
  • Lightning. A pig struck by lightning becomes a zombified piglin.
  • Piglins leaving the Nether. A piglin or piglin brute in the Overworld or End zombifies after 15 seconds.

They’re immune to fire and lava, so they wander through lava lakes without a care.

How the anger works

They’re neutral until you damage one and it survives. Then all zombified piglins in a big box around you (well over 60 blocks wide on Java, a 20-block radius on Bedrock) go hostile, even ones that couldn’t see what happened. A crowd of them with golden swords hits hard: 8 per hit on Normal.

A few things to know:

  • One-hit kills don’t anger the group. A strong enough weapon lets you farm them quietly.
  • Accidents count. A stray arrow, a sweep attack or a misclick sets them off.
  • They calm down. After 20-55 seconds on Java or 25 on Bedrock without a reason to stay angry, they go back to neutral. Hide behind a wall and wait.
  • Gold doesn’t distract them. Unlike piglins, they don’t care what armor you’re wearing.

If you do anger a group, back into a one-wide corridor so they come at you single file, and use a shield.

Drops

Drop Chance (Java, no Looting)
Rotten flesh 0-1 (50%)
Gold nugget 0-1 (50%)
Gold ingot 2.5%, player or tamed wolf kill only
Golden sword 8.5% (25% on Bedrock)

Looting raises all of these. Rotten flesh and nuggets drop however the mob dies, which is why farms can kill them with fall damage. Ingots need a player kill.

Gold farms

The classic gold farm is a big spawning platform on the Nether roof or over the nether wastes, with mobs funneled to a drop that kills them. Because nuggets drop from any death, an afk farm produces stacks of gold per hour, plus a lot of XP if you finish them by hand. Pair it with a piglin bartering station and the gold becomes ender pearls and obsidian.

Edition differences

  • Group anger range is much larger on Java.
  • Bedrock zombified piglins drop their golden sword far more often (25% vs 8.5%).
  • Java has leader variants with extra health and can spawn chicken and strider jockeys.
  • On Java, portal spawns appear inside the portal; on Bedrock, next to it.

More Nether mobs are on the mobs hub.

Common questions

Do zombified piglins attack you?

Not unless you hit one. Once you do, every zombified piglin in a large area turns hostile and comes for you. Killing one in a single hit doesn't set off the group.

How long do zombified piglins stay angry?

About 20-55 seconds on Java and 25 seconds on Bedrock, measured from when they last saw a reason to be angry. Stay out of sight and they calm down.

Is the zombie pigman the same as the zombified piglin?

Yes. Zombie pigmen were renamed zombified piglins in the 1.16 Nether Update, with a new look to match the piglins.
