Turtle in Minecraft: Home Beaches, Scutes and Turtle Shells
Turtles have 30 health and always return to their home beach to lay eggs. Breed them with seagrass for scutes, craft a turtle shell, and see their drops.

Turtles are passive beach animals with a surprising 30 health. They swim well, crawl slowly on land, and always remember the beach they hatched on. Breed them with seagrass and the babies drop turtle scutes as they grow up, which you need for the turtle shell helmet and the Potion of the Turtle Master.

Finding turtles
Look on ordinary sand beaches, not snowy beaches or stony shores. They’re easy to spot because they’re slow and green against the sand. About 5% are babies. Each turtle remembers the exact block where it spawned or hatched; that’s its home beach.
Breeding and the home beach
Feed two adults seagrass (break it with shears to collect it). One of them becomes pregnant and heads straight back to its home beach, however far away that is, to dig into the sand and lay one to four eggs. If you’ve moved your turtles to a pen far from where you found them, you’ll have to wait while they swim all the way back.
The practical lesson: breed turtles where you found them, or pen them right on their home beach. Our guide to hatching turtle eggs covers protecting the eggs and getting them to hatch, which takes several in-game nights.
Zombies and their variants go out of their way to trample turtle eggs, and many mobs attack baby turtles. Light the beach and fence the nest.
Scutes and the turtle shell
A baby turtle takes 20 minutes to grow up (seagrass speeds that up), and when it does it drops one turtle scute. Five scutes craft a turtle shell, a helmet with 2 armor that gives 10 seconds of Water Breathing. The timer only starts once your head goes underwater, so you get ten free seconds every dive on top of your normal air. It pairs well with Respiration, which you can put on the shell itself.
Scutes also brew the Potion of the Turtle Master (heavy Resistance, heavy Slowness) and repair turtle shells on an anvil. Since 1.20.5 they’re called turtle scutes, to tell them apart from the armadillo scutes used for wolf armor.
For long underwater work, a Potion of Water Breathing still beats the shell, but the shell never runs out.
Drops
A turtle only drops 0-2 seagrass when killed, or a bowl if lightning kills it. Babies drop nothing. There’s no reason to kill turtles.
Edition differences
- Java spawns turtles in groups of 2-5; Bedrock in groups of 2-6, only near sea level.
- Turtles can breed again after 5 minutes on Java but just 60 seconds on Bedrock.
Other beach and ocean mobs are on the mobs hub.
Common questions
What do turtles eat in Minecraft?
Seagrass. Feed it to two adults to breed them, or to a baby turtle to speed up its growth.
How do you get turtle scutes?
A baby turtle drops one turtle scute when it grows into an adult. Killing turtles doesn't give scutes, so breeding is the only way.
What does the turtle shell do?
It's a helmet that gives Water Breathing for 10 seconds after your head goes underwater, on top of 2 armor points. It takes five scutes to craft.
