Where squid spawn

On Java, squid spawn in groups in any river or ocean biome, in water between Y 50 and 63. Warm oceans spawn them in fours, lukewarm oceans in ones and twos. On Bedrock they spawn near the surface of oceans and rivers. About 5% of spawns are babies.

On Java, deep water below Y 50 has no regular squid at all. Their cousin the glow squid takes over in the dark, spawning in water below Y 30 and dropping glow ink sacs instead.

Behavior

Squid drift about, flapping their tentacles. When something hits them underwater they jet away and release a black ink cloud. That’s the whole act. Out of water a squid can’t move and suffocates in about 15 seconds, and it takes fall damage and burns like any land mob.

A few mobs prey on them. Guardians shoot squid that swim near a monument, and axolotls attack them if you’ve brought any to the sea.

Ink sacs

Each squid drops 1-3 ink sacs. Looting adds one to the maximum per level. Uses:

  • Black dye. One ink sac crafts into one black dye.
  • Book and quill. One ink sac, a feather and a book.
  • Signs. Apply an ink sac to a sign to remove the glow effect from glow ink.

Wither roses also make black dye, but squid are the easier source for most worlds.

Can you farm them?

Not easily. Squid can’t be bred, and they only spawn in water near sea level, so the usual approach is to swim around an ocean with a Looting sword. A few ink sacs go a long way, so most players never need a farm.

Edition differences

  • Java squid spawn within a Y range in rivers and oceans with group sizes that depend on the biome; Bedrock limits rivers to two and spawns at the surface.
  • Bedrock squid can survive on land with Water Breathing, but still can’t move.
  • Bedrock squid roll over when they die; Java ones just vanish in a puff.

More ocean life is on the mobs hub.

Common questions

Can you breed squid in Minecraft?

No. Squid can't be bred. Babies only come from natural spawns, and they grow up after about 20 minutes.

What are ink sacs used for?

Black dye, books and quills, and removing the glow from sign text that was dyed with a glow ink sac.

Why do squid die on land?

Squid need water to breathe. Out of water they suffocate after about 15 seconds and can't move.
