How to Build a Creeper Farm in Minecraft for Gunpowder
A creeper farm uses a low trapdoor ceiling to block taller mobs and cats to scare creepers off the edge. Where to build it, layout, and speed tips.

A creeper farm is a dark mob farm tuned so creepers are the only hostile mob that can spawn on it. It does that with two tricks. Creepers are shorter than zombies and skeletons, so a low ceiling lets creepers fit while the taller mobs don’t. And creepers run from cats, so a few cats on the platforms push creepers off the edges, where they fall to their death and drop gunpowder.
Gunpowder is the reason to build one. You need it for TNT, firework rockets for elytra flight, and splash potions. Killing creepers one at a time keeps you supplied for a while, but once you fly with an elytra you’ll burn through rockets fast.
Why only creepers spawn
A creeper is 1.7 blocks tall. Zombies, skeletons and their variants are about 1.95 to 2 blocks tall. If the space above each spawning block is two blocks high but has a trapdoor on the ceiling, the trapdoor takes a slice off the top. That leaves just enough room for a creeper and not enough for anything taller.
Endermen are 2.9 blocks tall, so they’re blocked too. That leaves spiders, which are short but wide: a spider needs a 3×3 floor area. Divide each platform with rows of blocks or slabs so no open 3×3 area exists, and spiders can’t spawn either. Witches and slimes are the occasional leftovers.
Where to build
On Java, hostile mobs spawn between 24 and 128 blocks from you. If you stand on the ground near your farm, most of the spawning happens in caves underground instead of on the platforms. The usual fix is to build the farm high in the sky, or over a deep ocean, and to stand in an AFK spot about 120 blocks above the ground or sea floor. Then the platforms sit inside the spawning range, and the caves are out of it.
Over an ocean is easiest, because water surfaces don’t spawn hostile mobs and you avoid lighting caves. If you build over land, light up or fill the caves below you.
The layout
The diagram above shows a typical tower. In short:
- Spawning platforms. Several layers, each made of solid blocks with trapdoors attached to the underside of the layer above, and dividers so there’s no open 3×3 area.
- Darkness. Platforms need to be completely dark. Roof them over and don’t place torches inside.
- Cats. Place a cat or two on each platform (tamed and sitting). Creepers flee from them and walk off the edges.
- The drop. Creepers fall into a central shaft. A drop of about 23 blocks or more kills them from fall damage. Hoppers at the bottom feed into chests.
Creepers that die from falling still drop gunpowder. They won’t drop music discs; for those, a skeleton has to shoot the creeper.
Making it efficient
- More platforms, more creepers. The mob cap is shared across the whole loaded area, so the only real way to speed up is more dark spawning floor inside your range and fewer other places for mobs to spawn.
- Sleep, don’t fight. Your AFK spot should be safe and lit so nothing spawns on you, and you need to sleep sometimes or phantoms will start attacking you up there.
- Give it time. Gunpowder comes in steadily rather than in bursts. An hour of AFK time is plenty for a few stacks of rockets.
If you want an easier first mob farm before tackling a full tower, a skeleton spawner farm uses the same kill-and-collect idea at a much smaller size.
Common questions
Do creeper farms work on Bedrock?
The idea works, but Bedrock spawns mobs in a different area around the player and has its own mob caps, so Java tower designs usually underperform. Follow a design built and tested on Bedrock.
Where should I stand while the farm runs?
On Java, about 128 blocks or slightly less above the ground or ocean floor, close enough that the platforms are within 128 blocks of you but far enough that caves below are outside the spawning range.
Why are spiders spawning in my creeper farm?
Spiders need a 3-wide space, so they appear when the platform is too open. Add rows of blocks or slabs that split the floor into 1-wide or 2-wide lanes.
