How to Download Minecraft on PS4 and PS5 (Plus Cross-Play)

Buy Minecraft on the PlayStation Store or on disc, then sign in with a Microsoft account. The free PS5 upgrade, and PlayStation Plus for online play.

By minecraft.bd Editorial Team·Updated

Buy Minecraft from the PlayStation Store (or on disc), install it, then sign in with a Microsoft account from the game’s main menu. It’s Bedrock Edition, so you can play with friends on Xbox, Switch, phones and Windows. A native PS5 version has been out since October 22, 2024, and it’s a free upgrade if you own the PS4 version.

Buying and installing

  1. Open the PlayStation Store and search for Minecraft. The base game is the one from Mojang. Bundles with extra Minecoins or skin packs cost more, and the extras only matter if you want that content.
  2. Buy, then download. On a PS5, make sure you’re installing the PS5 version (the store shows both).
  3. Disc owners: put the PS4 disc in a PS5 and the console offers the PS5 version from the game’s menu.
  4. Launch the game and choose Sign in with a Microsoft account. The game shows a code; enter it at the address on screen using your phone.

Not sure yet? The PlayStation Store has an official Minecraft trial with limited play time. It’s covered with the other free options in Is Minecraft free?.

Online play needs two things

  • PlayStation Plus for any online multiplayer: friends’ worlds, Realms and servers.
  • A Microsoft account for cross-play. Your Xbox friends list comes with it, so friends on other platforms show up in the Friends tab.

Without either one you can still play single-player and split-screen with up to four players on the same TV.

If you can see a friend’s world but can’t join it, the usual causes are privacy settings or the cross-play toggle. Our can’t connect to a friend’s world guide walks through the checks. To set up a world that’s always online, look at Minecraft Realms, and for all the ways to play together see how to play Minecraft multiplayer.

Servers on PlayStation

The Servers tab lists the featured partner servers. Console Bedrock doesn’t give you an “Add server” box like PC and mobile do, so joining other community servers takes workarounds that aren’t officially supported. If your group wants its own server, a Realm is the simple option on console.

PS4 or PS5?

The PS5 version runs at higher resolution with longer render distances. If you have worlds on the PS4 version you care about, upload a copy to a Realm before switching, so you have a backup whatever happens. Like every Bedrock platform, it shares the same features and quirks, which we cover in the Bedrock Edition guide.

Common questions

Do I need a Microsoft account on PlayStation?

Only for online features. Single-player and local split-screen work without one, but cross-play, Realms, featured servers and the Marketplace need a free Microsoft account.

Do I need PlayStation Plus to play Minecraft online?

Yes, online multiplayer on PlayStation needs an active PlayStation Plus membership. Offline and split-screen play don't.

Is the PS5 version a separate purchase?

No. The native PS5 version came out on October 22, 2024, and owners of the PS4 version can download it for free.
